Teddy Bear Gifts

There are many occasions that call for a gift to be given: birthday, Valentines Day, birth of a baby, Christmas, Mother's Day. Choosing what to give can be a daunting task - from clothing, to toys, to flowers, the possibilities are simply endless. Teddy bears are one gift that never go out of style. Young and old alike all appreciate receiving teddy bear gifts especially when it's unexpected. Who says a gift has to be given on a particular day or occasion? There are no rules governing gift giving and a plush bear gift is the perfect surprise present for an unsuspecting but well deserved friend or loved one.

Since teddy bears first graced us with their presence in 1902, we have been hooked. They have been highly successful in bringing comfort and companionship to millions. From the original classic design that has spawned countless imitations to period pieces and one-of-a-kinds, plush bears are cherished by their owners and families. It's no surprise to find then, that a teddy bear gift is always just what the doctor ordered. And, when it's unexpected, a plush bear gift is that much more special.

You don't have to be a collector of plush toys to appreciate a plush bear gift. For the past 100 years, teddy bears have been hailed as the world's most popular toy and are loved by children and adults alike. From what was once a humble nursery companion (and in many cases, still is today), to a valuable collector's item that is dominant in the soft-toy market, plush bears and bear gifts have made a huge resurgence. With the growing number of adults who have confessed to loving their old teddies, they are prepared to shell out large sums for vintage bears, particularly those made by the original teddy bear creator, Margarete Steiff. In addition to having these teddies for themselves, these same adults want to also impart those same feelings of having a plush bear, on newer generations, thus giving a teddy bear gift to their children and other loved ones, has never been more popular.

It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes a plush bear so special; their physical qualities are certainly a part of their overall appeal, in addition to the fact that when first created, they were able to withstand rough and tumble treatment, unlike most other toys made at that same time. And, while the bear's appearance certainly adds to its altruistic appeal, and if the next thing, a blanket of security you can get, for all that you should know that it is much more than just a toy. Bears often become our constant companion through childhood, sharing triumphs and disasters are there to comfort us in times of need and participate in our adventures, whether big or small.

The Reasons Why Kids Love Stuffed Animals

There simply must be an answer to why children getting attached to teddy bears or blanket. Actually, there is not just one reason, but there are many reasons. With each different reason is a different child with their own unique story.

The most common reason for this attachment to stuffed animals is the fear of darkness. Little children tend to be afraid of the dark. Therefore, they seek comfort from they're favorite teddy bear or stuffed bunny. This comfort comes from their sense of friendship the get from this special item. Being young, they may not have that many friends yet. This gives children the chance to imagine that their special item is the best friend ever.

Perhaps the teddy bear that these children hold so dear was given to them by a very special person. For example, a grandmother that has passed away or even just their loving parents going out of their way to make their child happy. That would definitely create some good memories. The certain smell of that item may also bring back some good times. For instance, the stuffed toy that the child is so attached to may smell like that apple pie that Aunt May used to make. This is all described in one word; memories.

The life of a child can be filled with ambiguity and clinging on tightly to a special toy gives them a great amount of security of having something familiar right beside them along the way. Toys give children the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively through the use of role play. They are uncomplaining friends that will never tell the child that it is "much too rainy to play" or "I don't want to be your friend anymore" and they will be strong against a barrage of conflicting feelings and treatment, thus helping your child build up an emotional awareness of his or her surroundings.

Children have a tendency to outgrow their special toys when they start school. However, for others, even after we have grown to full adulthood, it can still be a comforting thing to take out an old and much loved friend and hold them for a while. There is no harm in a child clinging to a stuffed animal. Just be glad that your child has a sense of security and comfort should they ever feel lonely or scared. That would be a load of your back.

Santa Teddy Bears and the Origins of Santa Clause

There are those that believe that certain kinds of plush toys should only be purchased and given at specific times of the year. Santa teddy bears, for instance, are stuffed animals which imply that because they are made up to look like representations of Santa Clause, they are reserved strictly for the Christmas Holidays. Collectors and lovers of plush toys, however, may have something quite different to say about that notion.

Santa Clause as he is called today, was actually a Christian saint named Bishop Nicholas who was brought to the New World by the first Europeans; in Greenland, vikings dedicated their cathedral to him; Columbus, on December 6, 1942, named a Haitian Port for him; the city of Jacksonville in Florida, was once known as St. Nicholas Ferry - an early settlement of Spaniards. However, despite his stature, in the 16th century, St. Nicholas did not have an easy time of it as Protestant Reformers frowned upon saints of all kinds. In fact, both reformers and counter-reformers tried to get rid of all St. Nicholas-related customs although their long term success was limited in most places except in England where religious folk traditions were changed permanently. Since St. Nicholas was so loved by the common people on the European continent, they continued to place sweets, nuts, and apples in shoes, beside beds, on windowsills, and before the fireplace hearth, for him to collect.

Despite the wide belief that it was the Dutch who were the first to bring St. Nicholas traditions to New Amsterdam, there is little evidence in Dutch New Netherland, to support that theory. In Pennsylvania, however, Colonial Germans kept the feast of St. Nicholas and there are other accounts of St. Nicholas visiting the New York Dutch on New Year's Eve (gift-giving on New Year's Eve had been an English custom since 1558 and could still be found in New York up until 1847).

Cultural transition was rampant in the 19th century and as was the case, New York writers among others, looked to 'domesticate' the Christmas holiday. Old Christmas traditions were not the ones we know today - families gathering around the hearth exchanging gifts and singing carols - but rather, it was more about mobs roaming the streets drunk, damaging property and scaring the upper classes. The holiday season came after harvest time which meant work slowed down and there was more time for leisure; both servants and workers were able to take the upper hand over their employers in which they demanded money and gifts, amongst other things. At the same time, a different understanding of family life and children's role in the world was taking place. With childhood coming to be seen as a stage in life which needed more protection, sheltering, education, and training, the holiday season became more tame, turning its attention to home and shops. To fit into the changing time, St. Nicholas also took on new attributes.

Whatever your beliefs around the origins of St. Nicholas, there is no denying that Santa teddy bears are a popular part of the Christmas culture. They're really nothing more than traditional teddy bears made up to look like Santa Clause, generally sporting red 'velvet' clothing, black boots, and tiny spectacles. Despite this iconic look, don't think for a minute that Santa teddy bears wouldn't appreciate being seen and loved at all times of the year.

Teddy Bears - When Shouldn't You Give A Teddy Bear?

Teddy Bears started just over 100 years ago, when a cartoonist creation showed then President Teddy Roosevelt concern for a bear cub in a cartoon published in newspapers. Subsequently, they have exploded into toys, mostly stuffed animals, stories, songs, movies, jewelry, advertisements and more.

These lovable critters are often given as gifts to convey the sending of a hug or expression of affection. When is a good time to give one of them. Actually, anytime.

Newborn Gift Many grandparents, as well as aunt and uncles and friends want to do something special and cute to acknowledge the arrival of a new wee one. A cute soft bear dressed up as a baby is an ideal gift. However, one does need to be sure that there are no small parts such as glass or button eyes that could in time fall off and create a hazard to an infant or small child.

Christmas Gift

Christmas is an ideal time to give a special gift to a special person. This does not have to be for a child. Teenager and ladies enjoy this type of gift also. There are many selections, and often at this time of year they are dressed in Mr. or Mrs. Claus outfits.

Birthday It does not matter if the birthday is for a child or adult. Giving a teddy bear is a special gift at any age. It conveys a significant friendship or relationship. There are birthday bears created for this occasion.

Valentine's Day A holiday or semi-holiday when this gift is very appropriate is Valentine's Day. It is quite common for a gentleman to give a stuffed bear to his significant other. Again they often come attired for the occasion.

Graduation Graduations are a special moment in a person's life. It represents a successful academic achievement. Whether it is graduation from high school, college, graduate school or any other academic event, a stuffed teddy dressed in academic robe and gown is an appropriate gift.

Wedding Although wedding gifts are traditionally more practical gifts, bride and groom teddy bears could well be an addition to a more useful gift. For example, let the bear hold the card that is going on the gift. That would be somewhat original and is something that will be treasured and a true remembrance of the special day.

Anniversary Anniversaries are very special commemorations of a couple's wedding day. A special bear make a nice gift for a husband to give his wife or significant other on an anniversary.

Get Well Gift Do you know someone who you want to cheer up, because that person is ill? A stuffed bear will be appreciated and bring a smile. It can be combined with sending flowers. However, flowers only last a few days, but the stuffed animal will be around for a long, long time.

Commemorating Receiving an award or prize A special award or prize is something to acknowledge and to remember. A cute stuffed bear might be a fun way to help the receiver remember the occasion.

Boyfriend to girlfriend gift It is quite common for a boy friend to give a bear to a girl friend. There are many occasions for giving this type of gift. However, probably the most common one is for Valentine's Day.

And a lot more. Although suggesting a variety of occasions for giving one of these gifts, there are endless times when this is an appropriate gift, either of itself or in conjunction with something else, such as candy or flowers. There is almost no time you should not give one of these lovable creatures. In essence, teddy bears are extremely popular and you cannot go wrong giving one to a child or to a lady.

The Enduring Significance of Bears

Personally, I have never been in doubt about the singular importance of a Teddy Bear to a human life. My love affair with my Ted has endured from toddler to Senior Citizen, so you could assume bias - and be absolutely correct! However, if you will carefully peruse the ensuing list, you may be amazed to learn the heights and depths some bears have mastered - with total equilibrium, and a great sense of style.

Here then, are some of the most significant heroes of the past 108 years (Yes...seriously, that is truly how short the history of these magnificent creatures is!)

* 1903 Amy Johnson - aviatrix (female pilot) was the first female to fly from Great Britain to Australia in her plane 'Jason' - with her unnamed Teddy Bear as a mascot. (Name your plane and not your bear?...well!)

* 1912 A Teddy Bear is reported to have survived the sinking of the passenger ship 'Titanic' on her maiden voyage from England to New York when 1517 human lives were lost.

* c.1919 (After World War I) There is a widely held belief that some Teddy Bears were sacrificed in parachute 'trials', so as to save the lives of humans. Later, unsubstantiated reports are that these would eventually become known as the 'Ted Devils'. And this in turn, would lead to them being used in charity fund-raising efforts. Being dropped from a height, using old umbrella canopies or similar lightweight material, with competitions based on descent times. One intrepid Teddy Bear was sighted recently actually sky-diving! He was seen to be holding very tightly to the hand of his human 'jumper'.

* 1900's Sir John Betjeman - English poet and author not only took his teddy bear and best friend, Archibald Ormsby-Gore to Oxford with him, he also dedicated a poem to him, and then used him as the model for the bear Aloysius portrayed in 1945, in his book 'Brideshead Revisited' (later adapted for film and TV). How fitting...how absolutely perfect - that when Sir John died in 1984, it was with Archibald in his arms.

* 1930's Shirley Temple, actress (film and TV), author and public servant, began her career at three years old, and is reputed to have had one of the biggest Teddy Bear collections in the world. Shirley would have undoubtedly agreed with a quote from Peter Gray -"In a world where everyone seems to be larger and louder than yourself, it is very comforting to have a small, quiet companion."

* 1940's Unknown numbers of undoubtedly significant Teddy Bears did NOT survive World War II bombings throughout Europe. And I do not know of a single Jewish Teddy Bear who survived the holocaust and the horrors of concentration camps. Perhaps someone has a different story to share?

* 1957 Elvis Presley - famous American singer and film star sang one of his most popular songs (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear - in the movie 'Loving You'. Elvis' best friend was a lady named Mabel (See later references to both Mabel and Elvis)

* 1964 Donald Campbell - British Speed Record-breaker - and unbeaten holder of both World Land and Water Speed records in the same year - was accompanied on his many attempts, including his triumphant 444 kph journey, by none other than his best friend, Mr. Whoppit. Tragically, they both died in 1967 at a speed of 478.9kph. Mercifully, it is said, they would not have had time to feel a thing.

* 1965 Walter Bonnati - Italian climber of renown - scaled the north face of the Matterhorn - one of the highest mountain in the Swiss Alps, with his Teddy Bear and best friend - Zissi - tucked snugly and safely in his backpack. Both survived to live on the tales of their adventures - maybe to this very day...but they would both be quite old now.

* 1980's On a personal note - once upon a time in a hospital not too far away (as I faced and then recovered from an operation), two deeply beloved Care Bears were brought to me by a small son and daughter - to "watch over me and keep me safe". And they did! (...and they never closed their eyes....not once!)

* 2006 A tragedy! Elvis Presley's best friend Mabel had gone to England to take part in a special show of significant best friends and toys of the rich and famous, when a guard dog apparently went berserk and damaged and destroyed a large number of the exhibits. Mabel did not survive.

* Some general observations - Teddy Bears have been seen at weddings - sitting in front pews on either side of the church; have been taken on honeymoons; have been taken by Kings and Princesses to occasions of State, and goodwill visits to faraway places. There are even some who have given their all for King and Country - courageously intercepting bullets intended for their loved ones. Then there is an endearing and enduring, rather famous bear in the Australian children's TV program 'Play School' (he was a leading light from the first episode in 1966) - and he is aptly named Big Ted, so as not to confuse him with Little Ted. An important note for 'globe-trotters' to remember is a rarely advertised fact that Teddy Bears can travel completely free on British Rail, The Indian Pacific - and almost all airlines. I cannot vouch for their full safety on 'Tiger' Airlines - sounds a little 'predatory'? Maybe someone has some first-hand experience on this question?

Can our gratitude to these loyal, loving and empathetic beings ever be overstated, when we weigh up their countless meaningful gifts of love to mankind? Clara Ortega says -

"When everyone else has let you down, there's always Ted."

Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt and the 'Teddy' Bear

Did you know, the most lovable and recognized childhood icon of the 20th century -- the teddy bear -- has a deep connection with none other than Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States? Want to find out more?

In November 1902, Theodore (or 'Teddy' as he was affectionately called by his intimate circle) Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, was staying in Mississippi. Roosevelt was there to help settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. In the spare time that he had in between attending important political matters, Roosevelt was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino to participate in a bear hunt in Mississippi, apparently one of the favourite sporting activities of the region.

Several other hunters were competing in this bear hunt and many were already proudly displaying their recent kills. However, much to the disappointment of his hosts, the hunt did not yield a kill. Eager to remedy the situation and wanting to avoid the embarrassment of having their distinguished guest return empty-handed, his hosts came up with a 'plan'.

The hunting guide and the hunting dogs managed to run to earth an old and wounded adult American Black bear who in any case offered little resistance to his tame capture. The captured bear was then tethered to a post and the President was invited to take a shot at it and kill it. Needless to add, President Roosevelt was horrified and flatly refused to play along, deeming it unsportsmanlike. Instead, he ordered the old and ailing bear to be put out of its misery. But the matter was not destined to rest there...

The story spread and caught the imagination of a political cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, who drew a faithful representation of the scene as it might have been. The cartoon, 'Spare the Bear' appeared on 16 November 1902 in the Washington Post, showing the 26th US President refusing to shoot the tame target. That set the ball rolling and soon cartoons of helpless bear cubs began to appear in other newspapers as well.

Sniffing a lucrative opportunity in the sudden bear mania, an astute Brooklyn shopkeeper, Morris Michtom, decided to display two stuffed toy bears made by his wife in his shop window. He asked permission from President Theodore Roosevelt to call these toy bears 'Teddy's bears'. Permission was granted, and the rest, as they say, is history. His teddy bear toys flew off the shelves, prompting Michtom to establish the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co., which still exists today.

Little they Michtom realize that he was creating history, and introducing to the world an icon that would go on to mesmerize generations of young and old alike as the all-time favourite childhood soft toy.

It was not just America that fell instantly in love with this adorable bear. Across the continent, in Germany, a physically challenged German seamstress, Margarette Steiff created a plush toy teddy bear for her catalogue for the Steiff company. They exhibited the toy at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903 and exported 3000 to the United States, little knowing that the teddy had already captured the imagination of that country.

From then on, there was no looking back. Teddy bears had come into our lives and were here to stay...
From its somewhat dubious origins, the teddy bear has come to represent all that is good and pure and innocent in the world. A mandatory prop in every nursery and a cute and lovable gift for one's sweetheart, the teddy bear continues to rule hearts and minds.

Recognizing a huge potential market for these teddy bear toys, other manufacturers joined in the bear mania by 1906, along with original players Michtom and Steiff. The craze for teddy bears had reached a crescendo with women carrying them wherever they went and children being inseparable from their teddies. President Roosevelt used a teddy bear as his mascot in his bid for re-election.

American educator Seymour Eaton came up with the children's book series 'The Roosevelt Bears', which became a huge success.

The original teddy bear, made in 1903, was handed over to the Smithsonian by President Theodore Roosevelt's grandson, Kermit. Teddy bear enthusiasts can see this most famous bears of all time in the National Museum of American History.

How to Choose the Perfect Teddy Bear For a Girl

Finding the right present for the women in your life isn't always easy. You can waste a lot of time searching aimlessly for the perfect gift, and there are almost too many options out there! In order to keep things simple, why not consider getting her a great classic gift? A teddy bear or other plush toy can be a really wonderful gift, or a great supplement to another gift. They are a great present for any woman, regardless of how well you know her. In fact, they can be personalized a great deal for those you are close to, or if you don't know someone's likes or dislikes, a plush toy can be a nice neutral gift that anyone can enjoy! And stuffed animals can be great for any age. Remember, overall a teddy bear or other plush toy is a great gift that will rarely go wrong.

Finding Stuffed Animals for Different Ages

Follow these simple rules to get the perfect plush toy for any age group. First, if you have to get a gift for a little girl in the 2 to 12 age range, keep things colorful and magical. For example, you could get her a unicorn or a Pegasus stuffed toy. Or alternatively, maybe you know that they really want a pet, like a dog or a cat, but their parents don't think they are ready for the responsibility yet. Get them a plush dog or plush cat as a substitute! If you have a teenager to get a stuffed toy for, get them something with some significance. For example, get them a stuffed tiger or lion to import courage or strength. This can be an especially great idea for a graduation, or some other milestone. Or maybe you have to get a gift for a lady that's 20 years old or above. Consider getting the great classic gift of a teddy bear! This can be an especially great idea if you want to get her some flowers or chocolate too. You can even have the teddy bear hold them! Or alternatively, get her a stuffed animal that can be decorative for her home or office. This can be anything, from a plush cat to a stuffed squirrel, as long as the toy is classical and natural looking.

Finding Stuffed Animals for Different Occasions

Always consider the occasion when you're getting someone a stuffed animal. This can include basics like getting an animal that's seasonally appropriate, such as a polar bear for the winter holidays or an eagle for Independence Day, but it can also include personalization. A stuffed animal appropriate to all seasons and occasions would be a teddy bear, but you can really make it special by personalizing the toy. Get the gift recipient's initial stitched on the teddy's paw or chest. Or if it's too difficult to personalize with the occasion, make the toy special by linking it to their passion instead. Here's some examples. Maybe she loves cats or dogs, so get her a plush set of them. Or maybe you know she's interested in exotic travel and wants to see a jungle some day. Get her a stuffed tiger or plush leopard. She'll be very pleased to realize how well you know her, and appreciate the cute way you've found to personify her passion.

Finding Stuffed Animals for Different Personalities

It's very important to find a stuffed animal that will speak to your lady's personality. For example, you may be considering the cute teddy bear with a bow tie, but maybe the woman in your life is a nature lover. She'd be much more likely to appreciate a stuffed bear that's realistic, natural, and based on one in the wild. Or maybe she's talkative and lively. That type of personality would probably appreciate a stuffed teddy that's as colorful as she is. Or, if you know a lady with a more reserved personality, get her a more classical teddy bear that's brown or white, or maybe a natural-looking plush cat. Or, if she's dynamic but serious, get her a plush horse or something else that would make a good decorative piece and be useful. Or, for the last example, maybe she's got a great sense of humor. Get her a fun stuffed monkey that she'd be sure to appreciate!

Stuffed animals are a great gift for women, because they are fun and easy to personalize, and nothing makes a woman happier than realizing that you've been paying attention! So remember, always get a plush toy for the women in your life by paying attention to their age, personality, and the occasion they are celebrating.

Why Teddy Bears Are So Widely Loved

The teddy bear has been around for a long time. Since 1902, to be exact. But the first teddy bear wasn't just from a child's imagination. It was from a presidents hunting escapade. When Theodore Roosevelt was hunting with friends, they came across a black bear cub. Since they had been hunting for quite some time and hadn't seen or shot anything, they brought the cub to Roosevelt so he could make the kill. The members of the hunting party wanted the beast shot and killed, but Theodore would have no part of it.

A cartoonist named Cliff Barryman made a cartoon of this scene, and a Brooklyn shopkeeper was inspired to make the first bear. He requested Roosevelt's permission to name the new toy "Teddy" after him. The first teddy bears weren't all that friendly looking. The smiles you see today weren't there, and neither were the bendable arms and legs. The teddy bear has changed drastically since then.

Now the teddy bear comes in so many different shapes and sizes, and there are hundreds to choose from for each occasion. You can choose the bear you like, and even have them personalized in a lot of places. Teddy bears are a symbol of love and compassion, and have been for years. Small children love to snuggle up to their teddys at night, as a sense of security. Older people love the little bears, because the feeling of nostalgia they bring. And what young lady doesn't appreciate a teddy bear from her admirer?

The teddy bear is a widely known gift to purchase for someone who is in the hospital. They are a small token of affection, and give the recipient a warm feeling inside. Most people choose to give teddy bears as gifts simply because of the sentimental reasons behind the adorable little bears.

Christmas is a big holiday for bears, and they have been incorporated in Santa's village for quite a while now. An Valentine's day is when teddy bear sales soar through roof!

Collectable teddy bears are a little different than normal ones. The collectable are more detailed, and often more expensive. Some collectable Teddy bears sell for thousands of dollars. Also, they can be made from a lot of materials, like jade, or porcelain. Whether your teddy bears are for a collection, or personal reasons, they will delight you and your family for years to come!

The Humble Teddy Bear

Now this may surprise you, it did me, but Great Britain never, ever invented the humble teddy bear that sits in nearly every ones house and almost every child in the UK, and some adults have at least one in their bedroom. Another fact that we should know is the fact we did not give the teddy bear its name.

Before we go on some facts :

The humble Teddy Bear was invented by a German Company called - Margarete Steiff, and of course we all knew this he/she was named after that great USA President Theodore Roosevelt.

Since the Teddy Bear set foot and made his/her self at home in our homes in the early part of the 20th century, teddy bears seem to have melted people hearts, male and female young or old. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and they also bring back memories of when they were given to us, or we bought them.

Teddy Bears appear at home and also they appear in the workplace and have even advertised items on television. They have appeared in books, comics, films, and TV programs. Teddy Bears are everywhere.

But it is the Teddy Bears that appear in the books we have come to love that made the biggest impact, why I do not know and I guess if you were to ask the authors and people who draw them would say "I do not not know", but we all know that they have and have touched many hearts and not many children have gone to sleep without hearing the great stories of these lovely bears.

Now there are loads of bears out there who we read and hear about and I would guess there will be many more, but there are three bears that have touched the nation and the world. These three bears can account for major sales, whole industries have been built around them and they continue to make money for everyone.

Of course I am talking about Pooh, Paddington and Rupert.

These three bears have captured children and adults alike and have made these same people spend money buying the latest toy, story or DVD and they will always. These three bears will always make people money. So if you see a Pooh, Rupert, or Paddington that needs a good home at a car boot sale, take a closer look, and give them a good home.

And if they do not sell, they will be there beside you for many a day to make you smile and laugh, why.... well they are Pooh, Paddington and Rupert, and with these three anything could happen and who knows you might just pick up a vintage one and then you will be smiling all the way to the bank.

Winning a Heart - Giving Teddy Bears As Valentines Gifts

Because they are cute, cuddly and can provide comfort, the teddy bear is that kind of present that you like too much to refuse. When you are offering a teddy to that special someone on Valentine's Day, you are actually telling that person to remember that you love him or her. Along with a box of chocolates and a red rose bouquet, the teddy bear is the perfect present for your loved one, because it is the best way to show just how special that person is to you.

You simply cannot find a more romantic way to say "I love you" than a bear and flowers. Both gifts are flexible and can be personalized, so that you can, for example, choose to buy your lover a bouquet of her favorite flowers and put a personal text on the gift you are going to offer her. Also, if you are a couple that appreciates jokes and have a strong sense of humor for instance, then you can make your loved one laugh be wrapping the teddy in a funny way and giving her a card where you give her a hint about the symbolism of the wrapping.

Another reason why a soft toy bear is such an appreciated gift is its durability. While a bouquet of her favorite flower is a gift that will deteriorate in a week and a box of chocolates may not always be the right present, the teddy bear will last for years along with your statement. If you are dating that person for a very long time and you are looking for the perfect way to ask her to marry you, then a teddy bear with a ring around his neck or attached with a ribbon on his head can be an offer hard to refuse.

The reason why the teddy will never go out of style for a Valentine's Day gift is that it has the ability to concretely represent the concept of love. Whether you choose a small size bear that your lover can place at her desk or a big plush bear that she can place on the bed or on a chair, the teddy bear will be the perfect present to surprise her on Valentine's Day morning.

A Plush Bunny Rabbit Makes the Perfect Gift

Plush bunny rabbits are quickly surpassing teddy bears as the number one plush animal given to newborn babies (and young children in general). And it's no wonder: they are simply too adorable and huggable for words. From floppy eared to perky eared, a plush bunny rabbit comes in all shapes and sizes. Some plush bunny rabbits come dressed in whimsical outfits and with their dreamy appearance and furry soft bodies, they can warm even the coldest heart.

There are many famous rabbits in the world that have been depicted in books, on television, and in the movies. Bugs Bunny is likely the most famous rabbit of them all; he was 'born' in Brooklyn in 1940 and is synonymous as the cartoon mascot for Warner Brother's and for his famous catch phrase "what's up doc?" Peter Rabbit was brought to life by author Beatrix Potter in 1902. He is most famous for getting himself into all kinds of trouble in the vegetable garden of Mr. McGregor. Both Bugs and Peter have been recreated as plush bunny rabbits so that children can forever be reminded of the Bugs Bunny cartoons and Peter Rabbit books.

Thumper the rabbit was made famous in the classic Disney film "Bambi." Thumper is so named because he thumps the ground with his right hind leg and he is also Bambi's best friend. The white rabbit in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, is another famous rabbit in literature. He runs around throughout the story with a pocket watch proclaiming how late he constantly is for a very important date.

The Energizer bunny is yet another famous rabbit who acts as the spokesperson for Energizer batteries. He is pink, wears blue sandals and dark sunglasses. He carries around a marching band bass drum that he keeps on drumming and drumming so as to show the long lasting life of the batteries. In the long line of famous cartoon rabbits Roger Rabbit rose to fame in the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" The premise of this tale is that Roger lives in Toontown and is framed for murder.

Rabbit from the Winnie the Pooh series and Br'er Rabbit are also famous bunnies from literature and film. The Rabbit in Winnie the Pooh is only one of two animals in A.A. Milne's stories that maintains his real name [of 'Rabbit'] and is not a stuffed toy (like Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore) that belonged to Christopher Robin. Br'er Rabbit is a central character in Disney's 1964 film "Song of the South" and makes a cameo appearance in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

It makes no difference whatsoever if the child you purchase a plush bunny rabbit for knows any of the aforementioned famous rabbits; all they will care about is how soft and snugly their plush bunny rabbit is and whether or not they can take it everywhere they go.

How to Make Money with Teddy Bears

Who can resist a cute and cuddly teddy bear?.. No matter what your age, a teddy bear can soften your heart. I still have some teddy bears from when I was young. They bring back fond memories, and happy times.

Well, I am here to tell you, if you think they have been overdone at craft shows, or online, then you are wrong. Teddy Bears will never go out of style, and the softer and cuddlier the better.

You just have to get a bit more creative with your teddy bears to compete in the craft market. A great way to create beautiful teddy bears, is to find a great pattern, preferably, a vintage pattern, or traditional pattern, you can get these online now from around the world.

Go to the re-use store, the second hand stores, or the thrift shops, garage sales and estate sales, and find those old mink, rabbit and fox coats that people are not wearing anymore. They are usually sold for quite cheap, or sometimes even given away. Even some of the faux fur coats look realistic. Some of the faux furs comes in brilliant colors, for something a little different!

Now sew your teddy bear from these coats, and you will have a one of a kind fur teddy.

Another great way to create teddy bears, is to make them custom for customers. Have your customer find some vintage clothes, or old bed spreads, or old coats that they are fond of, but because of the memories they bring, they don't want to part with the item. Show them how you can make them into teddy bears, and then they will still have the fabric as a fond memory, and a cute teddy bear to display, instead of old clothes in a trunk!

People still decorate their rooms with teddies, you can display them on the bed instead of throw pillows, or on shelves or on the dresser.

They can make a room a soft place to land at the end of a bad day..

Teddy Bear Gifts and The Teddy Bear's Popularity

Any child or adult lucky enough to be the recipient of teddy bear gifts, knows just how special these iconic soft toys are. With their facial features as their key attraction, closely followed by the feel of their 'fur' or skin and then the stuffing, they are one of those favorites from which many can never be parted, no matter how worn and battered they become.

The year was 1907 and at that time, teddy bears had all but overtaken the world. In that year, the Steiff company (Margarete Steiff was the original creator of the bear in 1902), reported selling some 974,000 of them, most of which were shipped to the United States - the birthplace of the bear's name 'Teddy.'

By 1907, it became common to photograph a child with their favorite teddy. In the same year, songs called "The Teddy Bear's Picnic" and "Teddy Bear's Lullaby," were published showing just how popular these toy bears were in the adult market. For a toy to reach fad proportions, it's long been known it has to appeal to adults, but when adults want the item even more than the children, the fad moves on to become a craze. In the book Kids' Stuff by Gary Cross, he quotes advertisements of the time that were used to show just how gaga adults had become over the stuffed bear creature; "specialized bear "fashions" were sold separately in 1907. Even magazines like the Ladies Home Journal offered patterns for teddy bear clothes. These included pajamas, Rough Rider, fireman, sailor, and clown suits...teddy bears were all the rage in the cities...they had become a fashion accessory."

The now world famous bears were once quite pricey (and still can be if they are deemed a collectors item) simply because of the hand labor and expensive materials used to make them. On the other hand, they sold well based on much more than their craftsmanship; boys liked them because of the real bears rugged and ferocious reputation; for girls, Teddy's were poseable and could be dressed up. But, best of all, unlike dolls of the time which were mostly made of porcelain or wood, they could be hugged.

Through both World Wars and even the Depression, teddy bears remained popular; the most famous soft toy in the world provided a measure of comfort during some very difficult times, when futures were uncertain. Even today, every year, sees the sale of millions of teddy's many often making their way into the arms of adults who cherish them no less than any child does.

If you feel stuck the next time you need to find the 'perfect' present, look to teddy bear gifts to save the day. A hug from one really is one of life's simple pleasures and with their ability to provide the same sense one gets from a security blanket, be a top notch plaything and comforter when needed, you just can't go wrong [with a teddy bear].

Purchase Teddy Bears at Any Time of the Year and How They Reached Popularity

There are no hard and fast rules stating when it's appropriate to purchase teddy bears; they can be bought as gifts at any time of the year, or, to simply keep adding to a growing soft toy collection. If you make the decision to purchase teddy bears to mark a special occasion (such as a birthday), the recipient will be quite pleased that you did.

Margarete Steiff was disabled by polio as a child, but that wasn't going to stop her from living a very full life; she made felt clothes to sell at her workshop at Giengen near Ulm, Germany. By 1880, she began making her first felt animal - an elephant. While it had been intended to be used as a pincushion, the women she gave it away to loved it so much, Steiff made more and decided to sell them. When the children of the mother's who purchased them saw how soft and tactile they were, they claimed them for themselves, turning them into a child's toy. Within a six year span, Steiff made and sold more than 5,000 felt elephants in addition to a whole other range of soft animals (all made of felt). In 1893, When Steiff exhibited her work at the Leipzig Fair, she was no longer running a workshop, but a factory that exported its toys.

The characterization of animals at the Steiff company was the key to its success and it was Margarete's nephew Richard, who was responsible for it. While he had been to art school, he was quite enthralled with the relationship between human beings and animals. From drawings of animals he made while watching them at the zoo, he went on to make designs which were suitable for the Steiff range of animal toys. Included in these were bears, but it wasn't until 1902 when an American president would launch the animal into the most prestigious position among soft toys, giving it the iconic status it still enjoys today.

Theodore Roosevelt (also known as "Teddy"), the U.S. president at the time, was an avid outdoorsman and undertook bear hunting on occasion. When he came upon a young female bear that was unable to escape her fate, he took pity on it and decided to let her go. When the press got wind of the 'incident' it became the subject of a strip cartoon by Clifford Berryman of the Washington Post, who went on to create a caricature of Roosevelt and 'his' bear. The year after President Roosevelt's escapade, Steiff quickly responded by making bears out of a new plush material made from mohair. She went on to exhibit them at the Leipzig Fair where a toy buyer from New York, Hermann Berg, instantly bought 3,000 of them to sell in his department store in the United States. The plush bears proved to be so popular, Steiff had to expand her factory three times between 1903 and 1908 just to cope with the demand of nearly one million bears per year.

If you have never had the pleasure of purchasing teddy bears, you don't what you're missing; from choosing just the right one based on its facial features, followed by how its 'fur' and skin feels to the touch, it's really a major decision that should never be taken lightly. Don't wait for the next special occasion to purchase teddy bears - just go out and but one or two for the sheer pleasure of having them.

A Teddy Bear Birthday Party Theme

Many small children love their teddy bears and other stuffed animals. I got the inspiration for a teddy bear party from a "teddy bear picnic" my town held - it was a huge success, and I knew teddy bears are still a great way to go for the little ones. Here are some ideas I came up with after the picnic.

Make Invitations With Your Little Ones

My kids really enjoyed making bear "sand art" at the picnic. It was a simple craft and you could easily do it with your kids to create invitations. Take card stock and cut it into bear shapes. Then use a glue stick, or Elmer's white glue, to spread a layer of glue over the card stock bear. Use colored sand (get this at any craft store) to decorate your bears.

You can write over the sand with a permanent marker, or you can glue a smaller card over the bear's belly with the invitation details.

Other ideas for invitations include just decorating your card stock bears with crayons, markers, paint, or rubber stamps. These ideas may be a little less messy than colored sand, but not quite so exciting for little kids to get!

Decorating for the Party

You can find a lot of teddy bear themed decorations in party catalogs. Some feature characters like Winnie the Pooh, and others have more classic bears. You can also create your own decorations. Black and yellow streamers to remind the kids of bees could be a good idea. Everyone knows honeybees and bears go together!

Of course you should try and have as many teddy bears around as possible. Other stuffed friends like puppies and kittens may be welcome, too.

If you're using a picnic theme, you can put red and white, or blue and white, checkered decorations up. Have picnic baskets and blankets spread about.

Food for the Little Bears

Get back to the honey and the bees here! Peanut butter and honey sandwiches are a good idea - you can even find a bear cookie cutter to make bear-shaped finger sandwiches. Other "picnic like" foods such as chips, veggie sticks with dip, etc. are also going to be hits with little ones.

Make a bear cake and bear-shaped cookies for a sweet treat.

Party Activities

Another great idea from the Teddy Bear Picnic my town held was bear goodie bags. The kids made the bags themselves. Find small, inexpensive drawstring bags. Ours were made of a light linen-type fabric. Then get stamp pads and bear, forest, and bee rubber stamps and let the kids make their own goody bags!

You can use paper plates to create bear masks for everyone at the party. Kids really enjoy masks. If you feel really creative you can make a little nub "tail" for each little bear at the party using fabric scraps.

Play "pin the honey pot on the bear" as a twist on pin the tail on the donkey. Draw out a large bear on butcher paper or poster board and cut out little honey pots from card stock. See which child can get it closest to the bear's hand (or maybe his mouth!)

If you've got even basic sewing machine skills you can make some quick yellow beanbags. Draw a bear on the bottom of a cardboard box. Cut the bears mouth out and let the children take turns tossing their "honey pot" beanbags into the bear's mouth!

Gift Bags

At the end of the party, fill everyone's gift bag with teddy bear Graham crackers. Look for other teddy favors you can add, such a jewelry or mini-bears. Or just fill with small items children love, like little yo-yos and jump ropes. These items are always a hit.

With a little planning and work your teddy bear party can be a huge hit. It's a simple theme that always works well for little children.

Who is Teddy Bear?

There is nothing like a Teddy Bear!

Since his existence, he has brought pleasure, serenity, and comfort to children and people of all ages worldwide. A Teddy Bear is very special, because he is more than a toy - he is a companion. He has wonderful qualities, he consoles when needed, he has compassion when required, and he knows everything about us including our deepest thoughts. He is our most intimate friend! Did you ever feel like that about your Teddy Bear? I am sure you did, we all did! How can a stuffed bear, although cute and cuddly bring so much pleasure and happiness to our lives? Let's look at some of Teddy's origins.

It is well known that the name "Teddy" originates from Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States of America 1901-1909, who was referred to as Teddy by the public. There are numerous stories of how the Teddy Bear received the President's name. One story refers to a Mississippi bear-hunting trip where villagers wishing to please the President captured a bear for him to shoot, however, the President flatly refused. He drew a line, as this was not fair hunting sportsmanship. This encounter became a famous cartoon story by Clifford Berryman under the title of "Drawing the Line in Mississippi." The cartoon caught very wide attention, which eventually led to the Teddy Bear and its name. Another story suggests that the staff of Hotel Colorado wanted to cheer-up President Roosevelt during a hunting trip with a gift. They presented him with a small stuffed bear made by the housekeeping employees. His daughter, Alice, liked the bear and gave it the name Teddy.

Based on my findings, it seems that Teddy was born around 1902, but this was not just a US birth. Coincidentally, at the Steiff Company in Giengen an der Brenz, Baden Württemberg in Germany, the owner Margarete Steiff, produced stuffed animal toys. Her nephew Richard Steiff was an artist who drew animal pictures for the stuffed animal toy production of the company. In 1902, Richard visited the Stuttgart Zoo and made a sketch of a bear cub. The company started production of his design and the German (Teddy) bear was born. How wonderful sometimes coincidences work. Was it destiny to remember internationally a great President throughout the ages with this divine toy? In 1903, at the Leipzig Toy Fair Steiff sold 3000 bears to an American toy merchant and by 1907 the Steiff Company sold 974,000 bears. Whatever the stories are, the fact remains that the Teddy Bear became a famous and beloved toy ever since the time of President Theodore Roosevelt. A nice long stretch!

The bear market is still going strong to this day. Teddy Bears or stuffed bears in general are here to stay for generations to come. It is interesting to know that in some families Teddy Bears have become heirloom pieces. Did you know that bear collectors are called arctophiles? The word derives from the Greek language "arcto" meaning bear and "philos" meaning lover. Bears are not just a toy for children, bears are also used as mascots by many organizations or as corporate gifts and uncountable other special uses. There are also Teddy Bear Clubs and some organizations even have annual conventions to celebrate these lovable keepsakes.

Teddy Bear has reached its 106th Birthday, that is a good old ripe age, but we all know he will live forever.

Teddy Bears - a Brief History Lesson

It is difficult to trace the history of the teddy bear, because it appears to have been invented independently at around the same time in America and in Germany. There is no possibility of copying, as communications technology at the time certainly wasn't good enough for people from opposite sides of the Atlantic to be talking to each other about toy bears - it seems that teddy bears were just an idea whose time had come. For this reason, it is best to trace the American and German stories separately.

In 1902 Germany, the Steiff toy company was trying to come up with new products. The owner's nephew, Richard Steiff, often visited Stuttgart Zoo to get inspiration for new toys, and on one visit was particularly taken with a cute bear cub. He did lots of drawings of it, and had produced a prototype of the toy, the Steiff Bear, that year.

Teddy bears got their start in America because of a widely-reported event involving President Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt going hunting in that same year, 1902. According to the story, Mississippi officials, keen to please the president, took him bear hunting, but the hunt was a failure as there were no bears to be found. One of the officials then brought the president a baby bear that he had caught and invited him to make the kill, but the president refused. Two toy-makers in New York quickly made a cute-looking toy baby bear, calling it 'Teddy's Bear' - and it was a runaway hit, with a huge factory built just to fulfil the demand.

It is here that the two stories meet. When Steiff launched its bear at a 1903 toy fair, the American toy buyers realised that they could import this bear and capitalise on teddy bear fever. They ordered 3,000 Steiff Bears, and the bears quickly became some of the most popular teddies both in Germany and America - and from there, the craze spread worldwide.

Success And Survival Tips From Alaska - Do Not Surprise The Teddy Bears

The survival expert Bear Grylls has recently starred in an amazing series of TV survival programs which are full of both survival and success tips. He introduced this episode as follows:

"I am Bear Grylls. I have survived some of the world's toughest environments. Now, I'm in Alaska, one of the world's last great wildernesses and one mistake here can be fatal. My mission - to show you the skills you need to survive here."

Alaska's landscape is made up of endless coastline, deep forest and huge glaciers. Seventeen of the highest mountains in the USA are in Alaska.

Mountaineers, skiers and hikers visit every year to enjoy the wilderness but with the thrills comes danger. Over 20 people die every year.

Bear was placed by helicopter on top of a mountain in the role of a lost skier. All he had was a knife, a water bottle, skis, a flint, an intrepid camera crew and a woolly hat! He would have to find his own way back to safety.

He described what happened next:

"I am 9000 feet up and there is nothing but snow and rock for miles and miles. My best chance of survival is to head downwards.

"The biggest threat to skiers is avalanche. They kill around forty people every year in North America. One wrong turn and the whole mountain side could come crashing down on you. You need to know how to avoid them.

"The key with avalanches is to read the snow and you can use the ski pole in front of you just to test the snow to see whether it is compacted or whether it is in layers.

"What you want is when you push it in, it is nice and consistent but if you push it down and it like suddenly drops a little bit, it's a sign it's in layers and that's the dangerous stuff.

"Avalanches are often triggered by inexperienced skiers and snow boarders who come to enjoy the forty feet of virgin snow which can often fall here."

In early 2006 a snow boarder from Anchorage triggered a 200ft wide avalanche on a slope just like the one Bear was on. His body was eventually recovered three months later. He had fallen 1600 feet.

"Where there is a risk of avalanche, always carry a beacon. They transmit a signal which a rescue service can follow.

"I've descended at least 5000 feet now and at last I'm leaving the high snow faces behind There is so much rock that it is becoming impossible to ski any further. All these skis are going to do is slow me down. I'm better off without them."

Bear dumped the skis but kept one of the poles.

"Below me is a glacier, literally a river of ice, and like a river this glacier flows downhill. If I can get to it, it should lead me out of the mountains.

"To get to the glacier I need to follow this ridge and it's not easy and the temperature is dropping fast. Temperatures here in Alaska can reach as low as minus 60 degrees and frostbite is always a danger in the mountains.

"The bits to watch out for are your extremities - your hands, your feet and your face. The signs you are getting frostbite is that your skin goes this waxy red colour and eventually black. Frostbite is a really horrible and painful thing.

"This ridge has led me to a north facing slope. This gets less sunlight so it is still covered in snow. The weather is not looking so good. Getting caught out in bad weather can be fatal.

"I need to get down fast but the slope below me is nearly 300 feet. I am going to use a technique called 'glissade'."

To perform the glissade, you dig in your ice axe to control the speed of your descent. If you don't dig in the axe enough you will go too fast. If you dig it in too deep, it can get ripped out of your hand.

Bear used half a ski stick as he had no axe and descended at about 50 miles per hour clinging desperately to the stick. He continued his account:

"I've reached a glacier. There are over 100 thousand of these in Alaska. They form the largest fresh water reservoir on earth but they are full of crevasses often covered by layers of snow. You need to be roped to a partner to cross them safely.

"My luck is in. There is solid ground running alongside the glacier. But at the bottom of the glacier there is a forty foot waterfall.

"There is an ice tunnel into the glacier which could lead me out. Check the ice is solid before you go in. There could be over 200 feet of ice above me and it could crash down at any moment. Only go through such a tunnel as a last resort. The further you go in the harder it is to go back."

I'm not sure what the camera crew had to say about this little adventure!

Then, Bear saw daylight ahead. It showed his way out:

"I have never been so relieved. Finally, I am off the glacier!"

He took his ski boots off but kept the inner shoes on. He drank some water which looked dirty but the brown colour was glacial silt or pulverised rock. Bear commented: "This water should be good to drink."

He continued to move downwards: "Now I am off the mountain, I need to keep heading down to find food and shelter."

He was dive bombed by seagulls who were protecting their eggs which are packed with protein, vitamins and minerals but he was out of luck and only found stones which looked like eggs. However, he was far from discouraged:

"The landscape is beginning to open up and I can see the tree line ahead and I am almost in the forest. I can see a thick forest and deep gorge and there might be a river at the bottom of that. Most Alaskan villages are along rivers."

He was now in bear country.

Brown bears can grow up to nine feet tall, weigh up to 1100 pounds and can tear a man apart. When rangers found the remains of a hiker's body, who was recently killed, there were two empty shells on the ground but the bullets had not been enough to stop the bear.

Big groups rarely get attacked because they make lots of noise. Hunters are more likely to be attacked because they are sneaking round quietly on their own.

Bears are at their most dangerous when they are surprised so make a lot of noise by shouting things. Bear started to shout: "YO BEAR! YO BEAR!"

But he felt uncomfortable however much noise he made!

He found some berry seeds in bear crap. The good news - there are edible berries around. The bad news - there are bears around!

I was once chased by a mountain bear cub in Tehran. I ran much faster than usual (I was eight at the time) and escaped. I would not have liked to race an adult bear.

Bear climbed down a huge 200 foot waterfall: "Let your legs take the pressure. They are much stronger than your arms."

It is crucial to take your time in such situations - you can only make one mistake.

He next found some Eskimo potato which is full of starch and carbohydrates and is said to be the most valuable food source in Alaska.

He built a bed with branches to keep his body above the cold ground and then found some alder saplings to build a half dome shelter. To waterproof, you add layers of spruce from the bottom upwards.

He lit a fire which would put off the bears. In this part of Alaska, the black bears are more dangerous than the grizzlies.

Grizzlies are territorial so if you meet them be submissive and back off. However, if you meet a black bear it will probably be after you. They kill less humans than Grizzlies but, in 90% of their attacks, they stalk humans.

If you are cornered by a black bear you will have to fight for your life. Most locals carry a gun but, if you are without a gun, grab a stick and jab it in the bear's eyes.

In the night, Bear heard something moving around. It might have been a moose or a bear:

"I hope, whatever it is, it will leave this 'bear' alone!"

He awoke at 5 a.m. exhausted on his second day in Alaska:

"I'm a bit cheesed off but that's OK. When you've been wet all night, it's OK to be a bit cheesed off."

He followed a stream to a river and then down to the sea coast where most people would be. But he could still go 500 miles in each direction and find no one:

"My best chance of rescue is to be spotted by one of the many small fishing boats that fish this area."

He saw some bald eagles who were after salmon. The river is packed with king and pink salmon. Bear did not have a fishing line but, undeterred he made a fishing spear. He always looks for an alternative instead of giving up.

Bear spooked the salmon into about six inches of water by shouting and hitting the water with his spear. He, eventually, speared a large salmon and tucked in immediately:

"They are packed full of protein and you can eat the scales as well as they are small. I've always liked sushi!

"I may be out of the forest but I am still surrounded by bears who come down here to fish."

He now looked for shelter. Caves are ready made shelters but they are often occupied by wild life including bears. He found a shallow cave with high walls where nothing could sneak up on him from behind.

He next found mussels. Shell fish should always be cooked properly first. He surrounded the mussels with two layers of seaweed which would steam cook them in ten minutes. I am suprised that Bear did
not suggest eating the seaweed as well:

"When you collect the mussels tap them. If they don't close, they are already dead so leave them."

He created a signal fire with white smoke to contrast with the dark trees behind him but he did not see any boats so he had to keep moving.

Suddenly Bear spotted some wooden buildings but they were deserted. Alaska has a history of boom and bust.

He saw some glaciers which are often tourist hotspots. He would have a better chance of contacting other humans there but it would be a long walk.

Bear decided to use an old boat which he found near the buildings. He used a spade as a paddle. One of the core lessons of survival is to be open to every opportunity. It is the same with success.

An old boat in a sea full of ice is a risk but it was his best option. He slowly worked his way round the coastline. As he continued, he came across a bay full of sea ice. As he went into the bay the ice thickened and ice blocks were all around him.

He moved in among little icebergs. These can suddenly overturn as the water melts the ice underneath. Freezing water was beginning to seep into the boat. He quickly packed his heavier clothes into his back pack to avoid being weighed down.

His boat sank and he was in the icy water. The danger was that he might suck up a huge gulp of water and air but he made it to dry land.

Once on shore, he removed the rest of his clothes quickly. You survive longer naked than you do in wet clothes. He did push ups to get the blood flowing.

His jacket had stayed dry in his back pack. This would help. He stayed put for a while and then moved on but:

"Just when I've given up hope, I hear the distant sound of an engine."

He waved his arms and back pack in the air:

"They've seen me! I'm on my way home! Alaska is a place where you can truly come close to nature and that for me is its real magic."

What success lessons can be learned?

You need to know how to avoid the disasters of life whether they are to do with avalanches, personal relationships, finance, health or life itself. Learn the skills and knowledge you need or employ an expert.

Don't hang about. Moving fast on any project will keep your enthusiasm alive. It will keep you warm enough to survive a mountain descent.

Get rid of whatever slows you down whether they are ski's or heavy boots or bad habits.

Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the ***** thing yourself! (Quote from Sara Henderson)

Go slow and take your time when facing dangerous obstacles where each step matters - sign any contracts with care!

It's OK to feel depressed at times. If you spend the night soaking wet it is OK to feel 'cheesed off' but at least appreciate being able to sleep most nights in a warm, dry bed!

Seize any opportunity that comes your way.

Learn which foods and drinks are most valuable.

If you go down into the woods today, don't surprise the teddy bears or you will become their picnic!

Giant White Teddy Bear

Lovers of teddy bears don't always care what color their cherished plush bears are, so long as they have one, or two, or three (or more!) at all times. However, collectors of plush bears would argue that color is essential to the collection, so as to ensure integrity and consistency in the assembly of plush animals. White teddy bears are just one color of bear that some collectors cherish.

William Davies King who wrote Collections of Nothing, says "nearly everyone collects something, even those who don't think of themselves as collectors." He defines the impulse of collecting as "owning something in quantity for reasons beyond pure need." Generally, children that collect things, also continue to do so into adulthood. Plush bears, are a good examples of things that children share a close bond with and as is the case, they feel the need to ensure they have them in their adult lives. What was once a cuddly companion that was used for snuggling up to in bed, often becomes something that is part of a collection of most cherished possessions.

Choosing what color and what type of plush bear to collect is a very personal affair. A white teddy bear as a collectors item is popular because of what the color white symbolizes. White is seen as pure, clean and neutral and is associated with both peace and purity as is evident in two very popular peace symbols: the truce flag and the white dove. You would be hard pressed to find another toy that can emulate purity like a white plush bear can. While the real bears they are modelled after - in this case, the polar bear - don't necessarily conjure up thoughts of peacefulness, a giant white teddy bear, in all its white glory, is still symbolic nonetheless.

Since teddy bears were created in 1902, it didn't take very long for both children and adults alike to figure out that they were much more than just a soft toy; they are companions who are there for us through the very best and the very worst of our lives. It's therefore, no surprise that we would want to carry on the tradition of amassing them in a collection. A white teddy bear as part of such a collection will surely assist you in ways you never thought possible; white is said to encourage us to clear the clutter from our heads and the obstacles from our lives which may be standing in our way of further success. The color white is also symbolically known to enable a new beginning Who knew that as part of a white bear collection, a white teddy bear could be more to us than just a comfort?

The White Teddy Bear and Color Through the Ages

With the range of colors teddy bears are now made in, settling for a 'plain' old brown bear is no longer the only option. From the white teddy bear to the pink one, there is a colored teddy bear for every taste.

Sir Isaac Newton, the English scientist, made a remarkable discovery in 1666: when pure white light passed through a prism, it separated into all the visible colors. Following more experiments, it was discovered that light could be combined so as to make other colors. For instance, red light mixed with yellow light makes the color orange. Some other colors also cancel each other out when mixed with each other - yellow and purple for example - with the result being white light.

While color perceptions are subject to individual interpretation, there are some colors which are universally known to mean the same thing. Warm colors are made up of red, orange, and yellow and are known to bring on feelings of both warmth and comfort as well as anger and hostility. Cool colors, on the other hand, are found on the blue side of the color scale and are made up of blue, purple, and green. These are known are calming colors but can also be associated with feelings of disinterest or sadness.

There are several ancient cultures around the world which have used color for healing - the Chinese and the Egyptians both have practiced chromotherapy or light therapy as a means of offering alternative or holistic treatment. In this regard red was used as a stimulation for the mind and body so as to increase circulation; yellow was a stimulate affecting the nerves and purifying the body; orange was used as a way of healing the lungs; to get rid of skin problems, shades of indigo were used.

Many psychologists are skeptical when it comes to the use of color therapy and believe that the effects of color have been blown out of proportion. In addition, despite the mood altering affects of color, research has shown that those feelings may only last temporarily.

If you choose to have a white teddy bear, you don't have to get caught up in what the color white means to enjoy the bear. While it's true that white is typically associated with cleanliness, purity, peace, and innocence, in some cultures it has the complete opposite meaning (eastern cultures see it as a symbol of death). Just enjoy your white teddy bear for what it is: a treasured member of your family that is your greatest comforter and friend; you don't need a color to have any of that - you just need the teddy bear.

Lessons I've Learned from Sewing Teddy Bears

Normally all of creativity is dedicated to running my jewelry business, Trinity London. However, in recent months, I've decided to try my hand at sewing, specifically making teddy bears. Since I only attempted any type of sewing within the past few months, I have learned many things in the process that I thought I would share.

Lesson 1a:
If you think your cat or dog sheds too much, making a stuffed animal is not for you.
Lesson 1b:
People coming into your house while you are making a teddy bear may think you have sacrificed your pets as part of a cult ritual when they see the amount of fur on the floor.
Lesson 1c:
If your significant other is not attracted to hairy chests, it's probably best to wear something over your clothes.
Lesson 1d:
Even if you bought the fur there in the first place, the people at the craft store will look at you strangely if you don't use a lint roller (or a vacuum... or just burn the clothes and change into something new entirely) before you make a quick stop at the store to pick up that one piece you are missing.
Lesson 1e:
Expect to find stray pieces of fur in odd places (i.e. - on the light switch, the curtains, the shower, etc.) as it clings to everything.

Lesson 2a:
Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric makes it much easier to see where you are sewing.
Lesson 2b:
Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric is so thick that it will make your sewing machine buck like a bronco in a rodeo.
Lesson 2c:
It is easier to pierce your thumb with the eye of the needle when attempting hand sewing than it is to pierce two layers of slightly furry reversible fleece fabric with the sharp point of the needle.
Lesson 2d:
When your mother suggests using slightly furry reversible fleece fabric to make a teddy bear because it reminds her of the fabric used on bears when she was younger, pretend not to hear her while swiftly walking away from the slightly furry reversible fleece fabric.

Lesson 3a:
If you didn't need to pin the section of fabric you are sewing, but it is still staying together, it is most likely on a fold and you shouldn't be sewing there.
Lesson 3b:
The person who designed the pattern put those marks on the pattern for a reason.
Lesson 3c:
It takes a lot longer to remove stitches than to sew them in the first place.

Lesson 4a:
When making a jointed teddy bear, if you use plastic safety joints, be sure they are placed exactly where you want them before attaching the lock washer.
Lesson 4b:
Asking your husband to remove a safety joint after the lock washer has been attached may result in an unexpected flathead screwdriver injury.
Lesson 4c:
It is best not to laugh hysterically at your husband's unexpected flathead screwdriver injury, as he will probably not find it as humorous as you.

Lesson 5:
If your cat is a bit skittish, she may impale your loved ones with her claws when she sees you walking into the room with a 2' tall stuffed grizzly bear.

Lesson 6:
If you have a child, take a picture of your completed project before you show him/her because you may never see it again.

I hope you have learned a little from my lessons... not that I would have made any of those mistakes myself.

Preschool Creative Activities - Fostering the Creative Spirit

Preschool is the time when children are allowed to explore their creative sides through arts, crafts, games, and creative play. As an instructor, it's crucial to incorporate a wide variety of preschool creative activities to every theme so that there's an activity for each child. Some children may choose to explore their creative side through drawing or coloring, while others prefer more hands-on activities like building, while others might express themselves best through games of pretend or other types of creative play.

Try some of these preschool creative activities that focus on the letter "T". However, they are not just limited to the alphabet theme. Many can be used when learning about animals or teddy bears, transportation, or dental hygiene.

Teddy Bear Rank and File

Children love teddy bears, which can often lead to a week-long or month-long celebration of all things teddy, such as Octobear or Novembear. Have each child bring their favorite teddy bear to live in the classroom for a month and meet other teddy bears. This is when the preschool creative activities can begin!

First, assemble all the teddy bears together. Then, have one of the children rank the bears according to a criteria such as size, weight, cutest, funniest, etc. This teaches children to look at pieces of a whole and learn the concept of ranking things. Plus it allows allow them to apply creative criteria to a set of objects.

Taking a Train Ride

When learning about the letter "T", one of the most important categories to explore is transportation. Here's a fun little game called Taking a Train Ride. For this game, assemble all the chairs in the classroom two by two in a line. For each chair, write a number on a piece of paper and tape it to the back of the chair.

Give each child a ticket that corresponds with one of the seats on the train. At the sound of the whistle, each child is to take their place on the train. Then, appoint one of the children to be the engineer, and they go to each child and punch a hole in their ticket with a hole punch.

After each child has taken their place on the train, have each person describe what kind of trip they are taking, where they are going, what they will see, and who they are going with. This exercise allows the children to use their imaginations for planning the fictitious vacations, and shows them what travel on a train might be like.

Tooth Time!

Finally, here are some creative activities for exploring another aspect of the letter "T"- teeth. For the first activity, children make large teeth from plastic bottles and white tempra paint. Give each child a two-liter soft drink bottle that has the top part cut off. Paint the bottles with white tempra paint, and once the paint has dried, each child has a giant tooth that they can practice brushing on.

Next, have each child make their own toothbrush to use for brushing the giant tooth. First, cut a toothbrush shape from a piece of construction paper. Punch a few holes in the head side, and string short pieces of pipecleaners through the holes. Tape or glue the pipecleaners to the other side of the toothbrush. Have each child write their name on the toothbrush and decorate it to their liking. Now they have a toothbrush to brush the large models of the teeth!

Try these preschool creative activities and then let your own imagination take over. Your preschoolers can also provide their own fresh ideas to use!
