Big Bear Stuffed Animals and Different Types of Bears

Big bear stuffed animals require real commitment from their owner; with these large, oversized plush toys, if they're not quickly regarded as treasured members of the family, who knows what they might do. They can be a finicky bunch, these big bear stuffed animals, so make sure they receive far more attention (and for much longer) than any other toy.

Different species of bears can be found living in North America, Asia, and Europe. In South America, the only species found there is the spectacled bear. In Africa, bears could once be found in the north in the Atlas Mountains, but they are now all extinct. Australia also has no bears despite the fact that most people think Koalas are members of the bear family; koalas are marsupials, which means they are an animal with a pouch (like the kangaroo).

The American black bear is the most common of all bear species. On average they weigh about 300 pounds although some males clock in at 900 pounds. While black bears are mostly black, they can range in color from white to cinnamon to reddish brown. They are excellent tree-climbers and often do so to escape danger on the ground. At one time, they could be found living throughout the continent but now make their homes in mountain or wooded areas in Canada and the Rocky Mountains, South in the Appalachians, and in the Great Lakes region of the Adirondacks.

Through many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, brown bears can be found. There are different sub-species which make their home in North America and Eurasia. The coloring of the brown bear can range from light brown to almost black and they weigh anywhere from 500 to 1700 pounds. Like all bears, their main source of food is plant material like leaves and berries, but they are also know for their love of salmon which they gorge themselves on when the fish make their way up northern rivers to spawn. If the opportunity presents itself, they will also eat elk and moose.

The grizzly bear can be found living in the Rockies - from Alaska to Colorado. Their coat is a brownish-yellow with distinct grizzled (or silver-tipped) outer hairs hence the name 'grizzly.' Adult male grizzlies can reach lengths of 8 feet and weigh as much as 500 pounds while females can weigh anywhere between 350 and 400 pounds. Unlike black bears, the grizzly can't climb trees.

The Kodiak bear, which can only be found off the coast of Alaska on Kodiak island, is a very large brown bear. In fact, they are bigger than the grizzly; they can stand up to 10 feet tall and weight up to 1,500 pounds. Like the grizzly, Kodiak bears love salmon and given they live in an area that is a spawning ground for the fish, they get plenty of it, catching up to 15 in an hour.

Like the Kodiak bear, polar bears can only be found living in specific regions - in this case, near arctic waters. It's main food source is the seal but they will also feed on whale and walrus carcasses. Polar bears can grow to lengths of 11 feet and weigh as much as 1,600 pounds. They are excellent swimmers and use ice floes (broken pieces of ice) to travel and swim between. With webbing between their toes and broad paws that act like snowshoes, polar bears are adept both in the water and on land.

Like the different species of bear, big bear stuffed animals are a diverse lot. You can choose traditional colored bears such as brown, black, and white, or, you can go with something a little more over the top like a blue or pink bear. If your interest is to stick as close as possible to the real thing, your big bear stuffed animals should be the same type of coloring you would see [on a bear] in the wild.

Gifts For Nurses

Gifts are one of the most beautiful and subtle ways to express personal feelings and celebrate a specific occasion. Just as the gifts vary according to the occasion and its underlying meaning, it is important to choose the gift depending on the person for whom it is meant. Therefore, gifts chosen for individual professions represent the qualities associated with the profession, combined with the general traits. The profession of nursing is associated with devotion, patience, love, and care. It is one of the few noble professions that has a respect and position of its own. Accordingly, the gifts for such professionals should reflect the virtues of nursing representing the individual?s respect for the profession and the person.

Nursing gifts typically symbolize the different virtues that a nurse is respected for and has to work with. These gifts may include nursing accessories, apparels, nurse desk accessories, nursing books and bookmarks. Individuals can also opt for nurse teddy bears, nurse pens, nurse jewelry, key rings, photo frames, inspirational showpieces, nurse magnets, and fun gifts. Home accessories, nurse mugs, clocks, and ornaments can also be considered while thinking of nursing gifts. Apart from all these, traditional gifts like thoughtful cards, inspirational books, nurse plates, flower vases, music boxes, candles, and lamps can be equally touching.

A huge collection of nursing gifts are displayed categorically on the Internet. Brief descriptions regarding the material and all the other details are enlisted next to the image of individual gifts. General nursing quotes and inspirational words also describe specific gifts such as teddy bears, books, and showpieces. The prices vary depending on the gift item and its decorative features. Individual items are recognized through unique code numbers that may be used for placing orders. Additional shipping charges may apply apart from the price displayed for the gift item. Shipping delivery time may also vary depending on the location and distance.

The Jumbo Teddy Bear and Other Types of Bears

The jumbo teddy bear is nothing short of an essential childhood friend - one that can be held and comforted and can offer comfort in return. Any child or adult that has not experienced life with a jumbo teddy bear doesn't realize what they've been missing out on.

When the original creator of the teddy, German company Steiff, realized that in order for their bear to remain competitive in an ever-changing toy market, they had to update their range. Other companies, which looked to Steiff for 'inspiration,' soon followed suit.

Steiff began the process of changing the teddy by moving away from its traditional design and going to something that was more classically modern. This new-look teddy was more bear cub than grizzly bear.

Following the initial change of the teddy bear design, a year later Steiff introduced Zotty (the bear) which was a much softer playmate for small children. Not only was he covered in long curly-brown mohair, his chest was also inset with a bib.

Steiff also introduced teddies with clockwork mechanisms; between 1950 and 1961, they offered musical bears that could play a tune when their key-operated mechanisms were activated. While Steiff went on to also introduce other less popular teddy bears - Turbo Bär, which was a reintroduction of their Purzel Bär (somersaulting bear), it wasn't until March 23, 1953, when it patented Jackie - developed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the teddy bear. Jackie was made using traditional materials but the bear cub was designed with much rounder and shorter limbs along with softer features. It was available in four different sizes and had two features which made it unlike any other bear cub: pink horizontal stitches across his nose and a belly button of dark brown paint which was sprayed on to the fur of his stomach.

In 1945, Wendy Boston and her husband Ken Williams began their own soft toy company in Crickhowell, South Wales. In 1954, Wendy developed the first fully washable teddy bear. When launched on BBC television in 1955, it proved to be extremely popular. British soft toy manufacturer Merrythought, created a range of novelty bears with the intent of having them appeal to a new generation of children. In 1953 it produced a bear in red, white, and blue, to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1957, it went on to launch its most successful bears of the time - Cheeky. This bear got its name from his wide mischievous smile. He had a very round head with a large forehead and inside his equally large ears was a bell which rang when the bear was moved.

Like the different teddy's designed through years, there are wide variations of the jumbo teddy bear; some sit up, while other are floppy and can either sit or lie down. Still others can stand up. No matter which jumbo teddy bear you choose, the key is to make a choice and ensure not another minute goes by without one in your possession.

Kodiak Bear Vs Grizzly Bear

There are many different groups of bears that fall under the brown bear species. Kodiak and grizzly bears are both subspecies of brown bear. They are both shy and attempt to avoid contact with humans. It is only when they are startled, threatened, or attracted by food that they will attack. There are usually warning signs that a bear is going to attack. While both Kodiak's and grizzlies have some similarities they are very different. Their environment, lifestyle, looks, and hunting activities are just a few things that make it easy to separate the two. Humans are the only predator of these two animals, other than themselves. They are both bears that have no competition for their land or food from other animals.

Grizzly bears are typically found in Western North America. They are brown bears whose diet typically consist of roots, leaves, nuts berries, and other animals. Although they are massive in size, stand anywhere from 5 to 8 feet tall and can weigh anywhere from 300-1200 pounds, they are very fast and have been known to travel in speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Their fur is usually brown but it can appear to be white tipped.

These bears are considered threatened in the US and endangered in Canada. There are only about 1000 grizzlies in the US. All national parks have laws or regulations to protect the bears from being hunted. Grizzlies are known for their huge size and being one of the largest land carnivores in North America. Unbeknownst to many, grizzly are smaller in size than their lesser known relative, the Kodiak bear.

Kodiak bears are the largest brown bear subspecies, their size rivals that of a polar, which is known as the world's largest bear. Their fur color can range from blond to dark brown. Kodiaks can stand as tall as 10 feet and weigh as much as 1500 pounds. An animal this size should be able to prey on any animal of it's choice, even though there are deer, elk and other animals in abundance, they choose to eat vegetation or fish for salmon. They are a solitary animal that has lived on the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago for about 12,000 years. Kodiak's are not as well protected as grizzlies. Each year there are 496 permits offered by the Fish and Game Department of Alaska. These permits are offered to keep the Kodiak population under control for their own well being.

Black Bear Hunting History of Arizona

Arizona has an interesting history when it comes to bear hunting. Going back to 1928 is where the story will start. Around this time black bears were being classified as predatory animals; allowing them to be trapped or shot at any given time. This all changed in 1929 with a new game code which changed black bear classification to big game. Along with the classification change came a month-long only hunting season with hunters being limited to one harvest. You were able to use dogs to hunt them, but weren't allowed to trap them. As the years passed more restrictions came into effect. Cubs were protected in 1934 and hunting season was closed south of the Gila River in 1936.

The period during World War 2 was devastating to black bears. At the request of stockmen, in 1942 all state refuges were open to bear hunting. Counties like Cochise and Graham had also opened black bear hunting seasons. Around 1944 both a fall and sprint hunt were created and lasted a full month. In 1949 bears were able to be hunted year long in Apache, Greenlee, Graham, and eastern Coconino counties, except during the seasons for other big-game species; this was due to their change in designation as a game animal. Between 1951 and 1953 the Arizona Game & Fish Department Commission opted once again for a full year season on black bear hunting.

It was really in 1954 when major efforts came about to protect bears and the hunting sport behind the, More regulations were enacted with bigger restrictions. Limits were set to one black bear per seasons and black bears were officially classified as big game again in 1968. This was crucial since the interest of hunters for black bears was increasing greatly. Between 1964 and 1980 the average bear harvest was around 131 to 313; however, this varied with population vagaries and weather conditions.

Concern was building due to the interest in bear hunting and the low reproductive rates. This came to the attention of the Game & Fish Department and they started to monitor bear harvests more closely. The mandatory checkout procedure was started in 1980, along with other regulations such as authorization of a permit-only spring season in select units, the elimination of bear baiting as a method of take, and unit harvest limits in which the season is closed after a certain number of female bears are taken. As of July 2006, bears hunters are required to present their harvest to the Arizona Game and Fish Department for inspection.

A Teddy Bear Love Affair

A positive relationship with a teddy bear is more important than you might think.

Millions of children around the world have had a beloved toys of this sort. These toys have been a great source of comfort and security for many children, keeping them safe at night and accompanying them on their daytime adventures. This relationship is probably due to the warm, cuddly nature of these companions which continue to pour out unconditional love whenever it is needed. In this way, the teddy bear ceases to be a mere toy, and assumes the position of a confidante and comforter.

The original stuffed toy of this kind was probably Teddy's Bear made by Rose Michtom in response to Clifford Berryman's cartoon of 1902 which showed President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub while on a hunting trip in Mississippi. This was the first toy bear that was made to look gentle and innocent and it obviously appealed to something in the human psyche. Since then, anyone taking ownership of one of these devoted friends seems to have imbued it with a life and character of its own. Like a trusted friend it travels along life's journey with its human companion, and acquires a common history making it the perfect recipient of its owner's hopes and fears and dreams.

For adults to admit to a relationship with a stuffed toy might not be easy, but when we realize how many famous people have come clean it is clear that it is perfectly acceptable to do so. Did you know, for example, that Dame Judy Dench, alias M in the James Bond movies collects teddy bears? Famous political figures who have admitted to loving their childhood bears include Margaret Thatcher, Earl Mountbatten, Dr Mo Mowlan and Queen Elizabeth. And Sir John Betjeman, a beloved poet laureate in Britain immortalised his favourite teddy in his poetry and held him in his arms as he died.

The positive nature of the relationship between people and their teddy bears has led researchers in robotics at MIT to create The Huggable. This is a responsive robotic companion with sensitive fur skin for therapeutic touch to help nurture the growing population of institutionalized elderly people worldwide who suffer from loneliness and lack of affection. This modern invention will no doubt have a positive impact on needy people, but it is a very sad commentary on the human condition in 21st century.

The World Teddy Bear (prose)

Today I thought of stuffed animals, plush toys, I used to have boys as young, were well done, when I was a kid, so all together, like me, I remember, I was eighteen, she pressed against me, they hug, a day he came into my imaginary world, and remained for years, some that I have addressed for years, some by my mother for my birthday and Christmas, all colors, dark eyes China, on my Panda Bear.

For me it came from a secret worldwithout the pain of growing up or even the birth, and suddenly they were there in the attic bedroom when I wanted to visit her. Waiting for my shoes and the top of the chimney in sight for me to return, and I never questioned, I grew up with them. In the dream I pulled into the sky. I never planned my adult life, I was sure she had passed, they were always around to advise me empty, but reasonable. I knew they were full, stuffed hearts and sewn over his eyes, without speaking. Iremained silent in the night with them, hoarding my bed, and she had dignity, no rituals, no one ever asked me for mistakes.

During the night, seemed to sleep in her teddy bear little beauty, I looked as if asleep, I go as needed, so that's because I grew up in this last year I was a small hole in my heart, you may place a deaf I left it like that, I could never say the words I wanted to say, I heard when he said, could be something, but theOf course you are never left each word to me except the fact that they bear in my world a little 'better for me, and I keep thinking of those who stitched together, she knew.

Tools and Techniques of play therapy

I'm not saying that therapy does not work, because I am an experienced therapist, but sometimes I think we should have a better method of traditional psychotherapy for the collection of information quickly and help our patients a quick results. It occurred to me that perhaps could help bears. After all, Teddy Bears one of the first items that we attach. It is a natural method of exchange of information among people, I find it hard to believe thatare not more common with adults and children used in our practice. Children and adults love them. Yes, even grown men like teddy bears, even though the macho image prevents them from admitting it publicly. For me, a licensed clinical social worker, Teddy bears only one of the tools of my trade. It 's like the doctor with a stethoscope. You are only a part of my practice.

This is a great technology and for the last 7 years I have usedin my clinical practice. Are you a natural method for exchanging information and promoting the grand narrative. They avoid the embarrassment of some of the traditional models. They are easy to talk. It is much easier to open and talk to your teddy bear, then it is sometimes with a consultant. I saw grown men and women are teddy bears and get quick results of treatment. Information flows like a river of information on travel, much fasterwith traditional methods. Words and stories are the stories of customers and people see the eyes of a teddy bear as fast as traditional methods with a board. If you are a provider of health care system, I invite you to try using a teddy bear in your practice. You will find that you get the results of the assessment and response much faster than all the conventional methods. They are a great tool for problems associated with pain and loss, or drug abuse workor domestic violence.

The Black Teddy Bear and Black Bears in the Wild

If you are at home to find your teddy bear to bring in a black, you must decide which version you want. Some black Teddy's like a teddy bear, while others look like a black bear. During the design were originally teddy bears in nature, are not all happy - instead look like teddy bears made. They order except that they wear only soft toys to the face and body of the Teddy's are usually asitting position with arms and legs that don't have 'claws' and many of them have smiling, pleasant faces; black bears, on the other hand have defined pads on their paws, 'claws', and are made so they can flop over and/or stand on all fours, just like a wild bear does. Their faces are also designed much like a real bear which means they have a long snout.

Many references to bears can be found in both modern and ancient literature, legends, folk songs, cartoons, children's stories, and mythology. They are the first type of animal most children learn to recognize. When looking at bear folklore it can be confusing to a child given much of it is based on caricatures - teddy bears and Smoky the bear on one hand and magazine cover pictures of ferocious, real bears, on the other. Traditionally, bears have been portrayed as villains so as to support the notion of man against nature, and bears in general have not been distinguished from one species to the next - the black bear from the grizzly bear, for instance. The fact is, the two species are quite different.

Black bears can be found living in most forested areas of North America, which includes all Canadian provinces except Prince Edward Island (they were all wiped out in 1937), 40 of the United States, and many portions of northern Mexico. From nose to tail, black bears are 4 to 7 feet long and 2 to 3 feet in height at the shoulder. They have small eyes, rounded ears, a long snout, light grey skin, and a short tail. Depending on the season, their fur is shaggy or sleek. On average, black bears are smaller than grizzly bears with a smaller shoulder hump and a facial shape that is less curved. They have smaller claws than the grizzly, which they use for climbing trees. Their fur is also less shaggy than that of the grizzly. The black bear has ears which are longer and smoother than a grizzly bears and they have Rist hair on the back that the Grizzly. More than any other North American mammal, bears, blacks come in a variety of colors, in the eastern populations are usually black, but in Western populations that are brown, cinnamon, black and brown at times.

If it's a real teddy bear black] are looking for bears, such as grizzly bears and wild blacks, be sure to distinguish what it is you lot [of black - you can actually say that inDifference between the two.

Large teddy bears and Industry in the United Kingdom

Large teddy bears are a staple of every child's bedroom and/or playroom. Because of their popularity and ability to transport you right back to when you were young, you may find them in a few adult bedrooms as well. It's hard to imagine what a childhood would be like without large teddy's, and let's hope we never have to find out.

The Harwin & Co. Ltd. were a British producer of top quality teddy's. It was founded by G.W. Harwin in 1914 in response to the import ban on German goods (where the first teddy was produced) after the declaration of World War I.

Harwin's early productions focused mainly on felt dolls which is why its most famous (and memorable) bears were dressed in the finest felt clothes; they were designed by the founder's daughter Dorothy. Ally Bears - as they were called - wore the uniforms of World War I soldiers and sailors in the Allied forces, along with those of the Red Cross nurses. While Ally Bears were very successful at the time, today they are extremely rare. While there is little explanation as to why, it could be because they went with so many of their owners to the Front and like their owners, never came back.

Harwin and Co. also produced the Scottish bear which was dressed in full Highland regalia; it was part of the Eyes Right range of bears which were so named because of their googly eyes.

Another British manufacturer of the teddy was Dean's Rag Book Co. Ltd. which was founded by Henry Samuel Dean in 1903. The company specialized in rag books for children which were indestructible. In 1908, the company went on to create printed cloth bears which were part of its Knockabout Toy series. The bear was cotton and had to be cut out and put together at home. A teddy bear rag book was also issued in the same year. In 1912, the company moved from Fleet Street in London to southeast London and three years after that they produced their first plush mohair teddy bear. The bear had pointed ears and long jointed limbs and was launched under the Kuddlemee brand name.

In 1915, The Chad Valley Co. Ltd. introduced a line of teddy bears. The company had started out as a bookbinder and printer 95 years earlier and was founded in Birmingham by Anthony Bunn Johnson. By 1889, Johnson, along with his three sons who had all joined the business, moved to a new factory located in a village that was close by called Harborne. It was here that the Chad Valley trademark was born thanks to the stream that ran through Harborne. By 1900, the company's product range expanded and included cardboard games. They began to increase their production on toys which was helped along by the ban of German imports during World War 1. This ban prompted the introduction of soft toys with the fist teddy bears appearing on the scene in 1915.

Some of The Chad Valley bears were initially filled with cork chipping but they solved that problem when in 1916, the company patented a stuffing machine for toys. During the war years Chad Valley continued to make teddy bears and by 1920, they had opened a separate location for soft toys in Wellington, Shropshire.

Large teddy bears owe a huge debt of gratitude to the original creator of the teddy, Margarete Steiff, along with many of the other company's that followed in her footsteps. Without them, who knows where large teddy bears would be today.

Collecting Teddy Bears

Not everyone actively collects these fluffy treasures stuff with love, but many people have memories going back to childhood that include snuggling a super soft bear friend when it seemed that nobody else was around or could understand the troubles of the day. Teddy bears are a beautiful and very collectible tie to each person's childhood that can take them back in an Time.

Certainly there are some brands that will bring more money when sold in a market of collectors, but for a lower value, no money, the special memories that many of us to take a very simple, who do not have a name that was given to now with love, as we have more than children.

Identify the type of building a collection of some formal, Teddy brings a niceoption. There are many, high quality bears being made today, and they have a rich history dating back to the early 1900s when Theodore Roosevelt was president. How to Clean Your Teddy Bear

Teddy beards are an instant favorite with the children. Teddy bears once brought into the house are almost impossible to throw away or give away. Not only are they cute and attractive but they are stuffed and comforting. Teddy bears are a guaranteed smile bringer to the face of a child. Once in the house a teddy bear becomes a most prized possession. However teddy bears are subjected to dirt and become dirty very soon. Since there are in such close contact with your children it is important that they remain clean. However imagine putting the teddy bear into the washing machine when your child is at school and it emerging 30 minutes later torn and tangled in all directions. Just the sight is enough to ruin your child's week and fill it with sobbing and tantrums. Luckily there are methods to avoid this complication and yet clean the toys.

The more delicate of toys are taken all around the house with the child. Hugging and loving the toy are reasons for its exposure to dirt and dust. These toys cannot be sent through a dryer because they are made up of flammable material. Cleaning of such toys will require methods that do not require water and heat.

Such toys should be put into a garbage bag tied loosely. The toys should be placed loosely inside the bag and not tightly squeezed. Place the vacuum nozzle at turn it on after. This will use the vacuum to suck out all dirt and dust. Use a little bit of fabric cleaner spray to give it a fresh spring feels and smell. If the vacuuming has led to any change of shape in the toy, re adjusts it to its previous shape. They should return to their original shape by lightly manual fluffing. This is not suitable to for small toys and can be performed only on regular size of toys. Smaller toys tend to get stuck in the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner.

In case the toys are of extra emotional importance or sentimental value the safest method is to manually hand wash them in a tub of Luke warm water. This will give you full control over the action and force that is being used on the toy. Some toys have parts made of silk or other delicate material which may have weakened over time and are prone to tearing. This will require very gentle rubbing with the fingers, while the rest of the toy may be made of tougher material which requires rougher handling to expel the dirt. This sort of dual force application can only be given by a human hand. It is not easy to achieve this with a machine. It is a wise idea to soak the toy for fifteen minutes before washing. Toothbrushes can be used to scrub fabric. Toothbrushes have softer bristles and they force can be controlled into giving it a gentle scrub.

Nothing is too difficult to clean. These methods of cleaning can give you clean and sterile stuffed toys without it losing its authenticity!

Pink Comforter Set - Not Just for Little Girls

When we think of a little girl's bedroom, we tend to think of a canopy bed made up with a pretty pastel pink comforter set and teddy bears and baby dolls scattered around the room. Of course, little girls grow up and their tastes change every six months, it seems. They go through all sorts of color schemes through the years but you know what most women want when they grow up? A pink comforter set. It's true, most women still like the femininity and beauty of the color pink but they don't want to seem like a little girl.

Fortunately, today's bedding doesn't have to be anywhere near the little girl bedroom set of our childhood. The range of colors, styles and fabrics available to us today allows the pink comforter set to fit into our grown up world without one thought to being only for little girls. In fact, with the right combination, pink can make a bedroom into a calm oasis or a wild girl party stage. It's all up to you with the choices you make. Pink is now all grown up!

When it comes to color, a pink comforter set can come in a huge variety of shades, from the palest pink to the brightest shade of screaming hot pink. You can also tone it down or contrast it easily by choosing a patterned bedding set, rather than a solid color. Or you can go with the solid color for the bedding and then add contrast and interest with different colored bed pillows or neckrolls piled high on the bed.

The entire look of your bed can be changed by your choice of the fabric, as well. A cotton comforter has a classic, timeless style that is tasteful while being durable. Make that same comforter in satin and it can take on a whole new feeling. In a rich-looking brocade fabric, you've turned the bedroom into an opulent space in the blink of an eye.

When you are getting ready to buy your new bedding, there are a few things to think about. Your lifestyle is one - do you need a durable fabric or would you prefer the silky feel of the more delicate satin? Your personality is another - choose a color and style that suits your personality. No matter your lifestyle or your personality, you will have no problem finding the perfect pink comforter set to suit your grown up style.

Life Size Plush and Teddy Bears After The War

With life-size plush to play a whole new way is now open to a child, no longer did a lion or tiger is to be immersed in its light, in the jungle, but you can use a stuffed animal that is almost as big as real thing. With toy bear that the height is 7.5 meters long, and giraffes that are 4.5 meters, plush size allows a child's life to make a real animal "life", all in the comfort of home.

The economy in Germany was nothingshort of a disaster after the country's defeat in the war in 1918. With the Treaty of Versailles in place as of June 28, 1919, the territory was given up to Poland, Belgium, France, and Czechoslovakia. Under the newly formed League of Nations, all German colonies were given to the Allied Powers to administer which meant that the former German markets were much smaller than they were before. It was during this newly created environment that the once lauded German teddy bear industry that had become lost to British manufacturers during the war, was able to bounce back.

The original Steiff teddy bears (which were the first teddy's ever created) were made with mohair, but after the war it was very hard to come by in Germany. In order to resume the production of teddy bears, other types of materials had to be found. The creator of the Steiff company, Margarete Steiff decided to use a cellulose plush which was made from nettle fibers. This particular bear was called 'Brennessel Bär,' and it was quite uncomfortable to hold since the fibers it was made from were very coarse. Between 1919 and 1921, a total of 19,556 of these bears were produced and today they are highly valued by collectors because of their novelty value.

After the war, Steiff also returned to using boot-button eyes on their teddy bears but as soon as they could get glass eyes again (which is what their original bears' eyes were made of), they were used universally. Most of the teddy's from the early 1920s had clear glass eyes with backs that were painted brown and black pupils. The classic teddy bear Steiff was known for, stayed very close to its 1905 design - a bear that had long arms, large feet with narrow ankles, a humped back and a protruding muzzle. In 1921, Steiff introduced kapok stuffing and every bear from then on was lighter and fatter than before. In the same year, a conveyor belt system was introduced in the [Steiff] company which ultimately sped up production, but all the work on the soft toys was still done by hand (as it is today).

After the horror of the war, peoples spirits needed lifting and Steiff brilliantly read the international mood just right. In the 1920s, they introduced a variety of cheerful, lively bears that couldn't help but bring a smile to the lips of all who owned them. Some of these teddy's were dressed (including one called 'Teddybu' which was a classic bear that was white, golden, or dark brown) in a vest that was full of color. Other teddy bears had brightly colored fur - Teddy Rose - a pink, long-haired bear that was available in 1925.

One of Steiff's most popular novelty bears was Teddy Clown which was introduced in 1926. It was available in 11 sizes that ranged from 9 inches to 45 inches and wore a distinguishable white Pierrot's hat and ruff around its neck. Petsy was another teddy bear introduced around the same time as Teddy Clown and it stood out because of its blue eyes and pink-red embroidered nose. Petsy was 'blessed' with large ears and with the use of an internal wire frame, could be moved around into different positions. Ten different sizes of Petsy were released in addition to a glove puppet and some that were on a wheeled chassis.

Just imagine the endless hours of fun that could be had with a life size plush teddy bear. Any child would fall all over themselves with joy after setting their sights on something so marvelous. If you're in the market for the next gift to give for a special occasion, look no further than life size plush.

Child's Play - The Teddy Bears Picnic - Ideas For Creative Play

Creative play is such an important part of child development. It is important for children to participate in pretend play or make-believe activities. This develops abstract thinking, negotiating skills, communication skills and a wide variety of necessary skills your child will need in later years. It is also a way for children to problem solve and practice social situations so they are comfortable when faced with the "real" challenges.

One favorite creative play activity I used to do when my children were little was the Teddy Bear Picnic. What child does not love a picnic? They see this as a special treat to have their meal in a different setting than usual. I used to spread a blanket in the middle of the living room floor. This was special to them because meals in my house were always at the dinner table.

One day per week, I would make sure I made finger foods for lunch that would lend well to the picnic theme. I had a little picnic basket just for this activity but that isn't really necessary if you are having your picnic indoors. This is how I used to do it:

Have your little ones help with planning the picnic meal. Little sandwiches cut into fingers or shapes are usually a big hit for picnic day. Fruit cut into bite sized pieces and maybe a cookie or two. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just anything that lends well to eating while sitting on a blanket.
While you are preparing the meal, start the pretend process. Ask them where they would like to pretend to have their picnic today. You can pretend to be in the forest, at the park, or anywhere they can imagine.
Once the meal is prepared, set it aside and have your little ones help create the scene. Spread a blanket out on the floor and get them to imagine the scenery. For example, you might place a stool to the side of the blanket and tell them to pretend that is a tree. Ask them, What else do we need in the forest? You will be surprised and how creative they can get.
Now get a little chair for each of you and line them up. Sit on the chair and you can pretend you are driving to the picnic or pretend the chairs are bicycles and pedal your way there.(great physical activity too) Or it could be a boat and you row your way there.
Now you want to invite people or critters or super heros to your picnic. Tell them to go to their toybox and find a friend to invite to their picnic.
When they bring their imaginary friend to the picnic, ask them to introduce their friend to you and tell you a little about the friend. This will get some wild stories going.
Now sit on the blanket and enjoy your picnic meal while pretending to observe the scenery.
When you are finished your meal, pack everything up, tell your children to take their friends back home(to the toy box). Jump back on your bicycles, row boat or car and go back home.
Teddy Bear Picnic day was always the favorite day of the week for my children. It was a great deal of fun for me too to hear all of the stories they would come up with during our creative play time. Every week was a new adventure. My children learned how to plan events, take turns and negotiate on where the adventure would be held all through the fun of creative play.

Big Teddy Bears and the Cantabrian Bear Species

Who knows where big teddy bears would be had it not been for some felt animal pincushions that were designed in 1902 by Margarete Steiff. Following their popularity, Margarete's nephew Richard went on to create the teddy bear. While his looks have changed a little over the years, that original bear he designed, is still the iconic soft toy we know and love today.

In past historical documents, the hibernation habits of brown bears living in Spain had been questioned. As a result, between 1998 and 2007, Spanish scientists decided to to follow the brown bear population through the mountains of the Cantabrian Cordillera, so they could put to rest the ongoing debate.

According to The Libro la Monteria - circa 14th century - authored by King Alfonso XI, female brown bears with cubs born in the previous year, did not sleep in the winter. Or at least, not all brown bears did. Carlos Nores, lead author of this new study, which was conducted some 400 years after the writings of the 14th century document, said "during our monitoring of female bears with young, which we did in the east of the Cordillera Cantábrica on the basis of footprints and tracks, we saw that some animals stayed active throughout the whole winter."

Monitoring of female brown bears for the study took place between December and March and the results showed that mother's with cubs aged between 11 and 14 months, were active continuously, much like young, two year old bears are when they are beginning to break out on their own and show independence. However, when the entire family group was together, the tendency was to hibernate more. In the two bear populations, where seven family groups of bears were followed, Nores remarked that "they did not stop eating or defecating over the period of observation, confirming that they did not enter the physiological state of hibernation at any time."

The study also revealed that during the months of January and February, bears that were more than two years old (which included females with either no cubs or about to have cubs) were less active, which confirms 'normal' hibernation behavior. However, none of the research shows that bears are not hibernating at all; while they may leave their dens during this period, true hibernation means the bears will not drink, eat, or defecate, although it is possible they very well might do so on occasion.

We know for a fact that big teddy bears don't sleep. In fact, the only time they might get any rest at all is when their owner finally retires for the night. Big teddy bears are 'on call' 24 hours a day, 7 days a week given they have a very large role to play; they need to be there to share triumph and disaster, comfort in times of sadness, and join in adventures great and small. No sleep for big teddy bears is a small price to pay really, when you consider just how important they are in a child's life.

Stuffed Animals - How to Take Good Care of Them

It's wonderful having plush toys around, and most of us have a quite a stuffed animal collection. However, taking care of these toys can sometimes be a real bother. When they're out in the open they can get dusty and dirty, and then what do you do? Many people just wind up boxing their stuffed animals away and locking them in the closet to avoid the hassle. But there are better ways. Read through this advice and you will find great ways to take care of your stuffed animal collection. You can keep your plush toys displayed and still keep them clean, just follow this advice!

One of the easiest things you can do to consistently keep your stuffed animals clean is to occasionally dust them off. Dust mites accumulate all over your house, so when you're dusting as part of your regularly scheduled cleaning, why not also clean off your teddy bears? You can dust them using a regular duster or even baby wipes. Baby wipes are sometimes even easier to use on fur because the wet surface gives the dust mites something to cling on to. Remember to dust regularly, and you will find that your teddy bear's colors will remain bright and sharp.

If you have larger plush toys, another great idea is to use a hand vacuum. This will get dirt and dust off of your toy more thoroughly, better even than a plain duster. Still, if you are planning to use a vacuum, be very careful. Some stuffed animals aren't sturdy enough to withstand a vacuum, especially if it's suction is extra powerful. Make sure the material it's made from is not too fragile. You don't want your teddy bear to lose a nose or a button from its clothes just because you rushed.

Also, if it's an option, the most effective way to clean a stuffed animal is to machine wash. You can decide if this is an option or not be reading the label. Just like food labels or clothing tags, a plush toy label will let you know if the animal is machine washable. Still, even if it is, make sure to use a gentle cycle with softener, which will make sure to maintain the softness of your toy. In addition, you can learn from my example. I once washed my favorite plush cat, only to find it looked rather worn out when I finished. Luckily, I had the bright idea to use a hair dryer, and soon it was nice and fluffy again. I did the same thing with a stuffed lion's mane, and it looked as good as new after the magic of my hair dryer. Blow-drying definitely works to fluff up any toy's fur.

These tips for stuffed animal care should make your life easier, and keep your toys happier. Dread dust no more! There is no longer a reason to lock your adorable plush toys away in the closet, show those teddy bears off! Just incorporate a small dusting into your cleaning routine regularly, or use the washer if you need a more thorough cleaning. Remember, it's not nearly as difficult as you'd think to keep your toys looking fresh and new.

Life Size Stuffed Animals and Teddy Bears Designed by Women

Life size stuffed animals are exactly what you think they are: soft toys that are big as the real thing. Just imagine a plush black bear that's 7.5 feet long and as wide as a queen sized bed - from nose to tail, the real thing can reach lengths of 7 feet. If it's authenticity you're looking for in your soft toys, you can have it with life size stuffed animals.

In the first half of the 20th century, there were many women (designers, managers, and owners) that had a direct influence on the teddy bear industry. This, at a time, when in Britain women over thirty had just been given the right to vote (in 1918). While the careful work and dexterity of women had always been of great value in both the textile and clothing industries, very few of them had ever reached the upper levels of management. In the years following World War I, there was a shortage of men; many of them had been killed or injured on the battlefield. With this, combined with the fact that the teddy bear industry was a relatively new one, there was an overall lack of tradition, thus giving women opportunities they had never had before.

Norah Wellings began her career at the Chad Valley toy company designing soft toys. She stayed in that same position from 1919 to 1926 and then left to set up her own factory in Wellington, Shropshire (England) called the Victoria Toy Works. Norah's main focus was on cloth dolls but in her range of toys, she did include some teddy bears.

Norah Wellings's teddy bears were very unique and a little out of the ordinary; they had more in common with the dolls she made than they did with traditional teddy's - they often had no joints, were dressed, and had cloth bodies. Her brother was very heavily involved in the business and when he died in 1959, Nora decided to retire.

E.M. Daniels was another women in the teddy bear business. While she had far less experience that Norah Wellings, she did work for six months with different established toymakers before opening her own company in 1914 - it was called Jungle Toys. While she started out with just two employees, by 1919, she had 15 people working for her and exported worldwide. Daniels' teddy bear designs played on its cute looks, something that was evident in her Bingo Bear (a koala that was launched in 1928 when it was believed koala's were part of the bear family).

In the 1930s, two women (whose names are unknown), set up a soft toy company called Pixie Toys. One of Norah Wellings' former employees, Elizabeth Simmonds, joined Pixie as a designer; it was her contributions which had a major effect on the way in which Pixie bears developed. They share quite a few characteristics of some other famous teddy's made by British companies Merrythought and Farnell, including webbed-paw claws. Elizabeth Simmonds went on to buy Pixie Toys from the founders in the late 1930s. When the demand for toys was during and after the Second World War, in 1955 there was a takeover of the company. The new ownership structure, has managed only seven years and the company closed its doors in 1962.

When it comes to living large stuffed animals, bears, Teddy, this world will appear "live" inside when he wants to see much of it as the bears first industry created by the most influential women of Teddy should not stand out with a selection. Selectany life size stuffed animal, for that matter, should be an easy decision.

Collectible Teddy Bears History

Collectible Teddy Bears are the ones that were made in 1902. The history of the teddy bear began after a cartoon in the Washington Post "showed President Theodore Roosevelt, saving the life of a bear in the hunt.

The image of the teddy bear collectors, we now know that his wife was created by a shop owner. The business was the novelty and Ideal Toy Company. Because of the demand and popularity, more peopleare joining the trend.

A number of manufacturers and factories have produced different designs of these bears for so many years now. In fact, the oldest manufacturers are over a 100 years in production.

The new factories are inspired by the styles of the old factories and modernize these in such a way that could make the current generation like the bears that they manufacture. If you are an aficionado, then you should be sure that you are getting vintage designs if you are paying a vintage price for it.

Those who are into Steiff collectible teddy bears check for the distinctive buttons that can be found behind the ears of the bears. This is the Steiff trademark. Steiff is a manufacturer that has partnered with German manufacturers.

It was in 1903 when an American buyer saw these designs at the Leipzig Fair and ordered 3000 models which he brought to the United States. Today, faithful collectors see the Steiff collectible teddy bears as their treasures.

It can also be restored. These are the heirloom bears. Whenever the bears have been damaged or are now unwanted, the collector can have these restored. She can have this done for a low price and invest in the bear once it has been restored.

In fact, there are some bears that can be restored in such a way that their limbs and legs are poseable and movable. Hips, shoulder joints, and necks of collectible teddy bears can be moved even if they started off as still and rigid in the first place.

Manufacturers of the collectible teddy bears also know how to get the attention of any collector. For one, they make the appearance more attention grabbing by making hand sewn eyes and embroidered noses.

These give the collectible teddy bears a more authentic feel, as opposed to the plastic facial features. They also add special Accessories like big, shiny bow tie at the neck of the bear. If they given gift so that the perfect finishing touch.

The Pig Plush Toy and The Pot Belly Pig As A Pet

Pig plush toys are just as sought after as teddy bears; if not for how adorable they are, then for how collectible they are. While there are dozens of books and information on the art of collecting teddy bears, the same isn't true for pig plush toys. Many collectors of plush pigs set their own standards such as the pig must have a curly tail (versus) a straight one, in order for it to be worthy enough to make it into a collection.

While some would never consider having a pig as a pet in their home, the truth of the matter is, they are a very popular choice next to a dog or cat. Pot belly pigs in particular are highly sought after given they can be easily house and leash trained like a dog.

Like with anything, there are both negatives and positives to owning a pot belly pig. On the negative end, they can be quite demanding making many feel overwhelmed with all their needs. Pot belly pigs are also sensitive and quite headstrong, requiring the right amount of stimulation so they don't fall prey boredom which can then lead to destructive behavior.

When it comes to food, pigs are unrelenting in their search for it; they can learn to open cupboards, the fridge, and the pantry just to get at it. They will beg for food and can become quite demanding in that endeavor. So much so, in fact, they may even get aggressive with children that have food. Pigs are also an animal that explores with their snout which means they might resort to turning things over in the house (like wastebaskets) and digging up the landscape in the yard. Given this is instinctual behavior in pigs, they should be given a place where they can "root" around in soft dirt.

Pot belly pigs have also been known to be aggressive in their quest to be the dominant one and establish territory. Like dogs, they need to be shown by their human owner who is in charge so that both respect and learn to obey boundaries. Teaching a pig the word "no" and using gentle but firm discipline will go a long way to solving this problem. Pot belly pigs also respond very well to positive reinforcement versus receiving physical punishment.
On the positive side, pot belly pigs are very playful, affectionate, intelligent, clean, odor-free, quiet, and, for the most part, non-allergenic. They're very social and need lots of interaction and attention, although for some that may be a negative. Pot belly pigs can live on average 12 to 18 years of age with some estimates put it at more than 20 years. Despite its name, where they are often called - in miniature pot-bellied pig - when fully grown they can weigh up to 125 lbs.

If you have always wanted a pig as a pet not to have to do, but under the right circumstances, is a pig stuffed animal a convenient alternative. Although it is not able to interact with you in exactly the same way as the real thing, a pig toy you put hours and hours of happinessnonetheless.

Many times, teddy bears also make great gifts just to tell her that you are thinking of her without the need for any special occasion or a reason for you to send one.

Traveling Teddy Bears - The Universal Ambassador

What is meant by the expression, "Universal Ambassador"? One definition of ambassador, according to Dictionary.com, is a diplomatic official of the highest rank as it relates to governments and the state. Another definition is an authorized messenger or representative. In the case of educating with traveling teddy bears, the later definition works perfectly: the teddy bears represent the highest level of authorized messengers for sending reports back to the classroom with their findings and experiences as they journey with their traveling companions throughout the school year and throughout the world. Because everyone loves and understands teddy bears, the term, "universal" is used to signify how important and all encompassing these soft plush toys are in the hearts of people.

When the traveling teddy bears program was in its development, it was important to find a smallish soft plush toy that could easily be carried or transported from place to place. It was also important to find a toy that everyone could identify with, and be drawn towards, in order to make this classroom project more relevant to the learners. It was suggested that a symbol of Canada, such as the beaver, be used. (The beaver appears as a symbol on the 5cent coin). Every country has its identifiable coin, flags, flowers, birds, and animals, but the teddy bear is recognized by everyone. Hence, its universality. So, it was found that the classroom teddy bear would be authorized messenger to bring information to students. And that teddy bear will travel as a universal ambassador program was created in

How can a universal ambassador to help with training? Often even the teddy bears are not talking about their many adventures. Rather, they require human input to the information given to new students in the classroom sent. Toaccomplish this, the traveling companion writes in the journal and on postcards from the perspective of the teddy bear. This information is returned via regular post, or via email. What usually happens is that the human companion views the world through the teddy bear's eyes and relates that information to the student at an age appropriate level. Doing it this way, students read the print on the postcards to their classmates, and experience the adventures throughout the year. Teachers integrate the information into the subject specific curriculum, and without the students being aware, they are learning.

Thinking about "universal" as it relates to the school as a whole, an interesting situation occurred during this program. Namely, other grade levels had the opportunity to get involved with this project in a very direct way. Over a couple of years, intermediate grade students (Grades 7 and 8), assisted with this project by providing artwork for the year end presentations of the teddy bear travels. They were asked to create the flags for the countries visited by these universal ambassadors, for display on the gymnasium walls during the year end assemblies and evening display. Not only were the intermediate teachers able to use their students' artwork for evaluative purposes, it provided for a community within the school. Other universal features of this program included: a) involvement of parents and the school administration to co-ordinate and help the students create lap quilt blocks for their teddy bears; b) patronizing of the community's retail stores for donations; and c) the purchase of project specific supplies (invitations, writing paper) for inclusion in the curriculum.

Educating with traveling teddy bears as the universal ambassadors, opens up a world of excitement, learning, and community involvement. Since teddy bears are a recognized commodity throughout the world, it is not hard to understand why students, parents, teachers and grandparents love to participate in a project that enhances the learning process, while engaging the community in learning.

Teddy Bears Are Loved by All, But How Did They Come Into Being?

Today it's hard to imagine a world without our much loved and loyal friend, the teddy bear. The teddy bear has only been with us for just over 100 years, making his first appearance in 1902. Then, in one of those impossible to explain coincidences, the teddy appeared in the same year on opposite sides of the world - in Germany and the USA.

In America, the teddy bear came into being with a cartoon showing President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby bear. According to this tale, Roosevelt had traveled to Mississippi to help settle a border dispute between that state and Louisiana, and while there, found time to go bear hunting. There were no bears to be found, but his hosts were desperate that he should have a good time. So eventually someone captured a bear and invited Roosevelt to shoot it. Roosevelt's refusal to fire at such a helpless target inspired the famous cartoon with its message regarding the two ways Roosevelt was drawing a line, ie settling a border dispute and refusing to shoot a captive animal.

The cartoon caused an immediate sensation and was reprinted across the USA. It inspired Morris and Rose Michtom of Brooklyn, New York, to make a bear to commemorate their president's actions and they named it "Teddy's Bear." It was placed in the window of their New York candy and stationery store. Instead of looking fierce and standing on all four paws like earlier toy bears, this bear looked cute , innocent, and honest, like the bear in the now famous cartoon. That could be why "Teddy's Bear" became so popular with both adults and children across the country. In fact, the demand was so strong that the Michtoms, with the help of a wholesale firm called Butler Brothers, established the first teddy bear manufacturer in the United States, the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

At the same time, but on the other side of the Atlantic, in Germany, a young man by the name of Richard Steiff was working for his aunt, Margarete Steiff, in her stuffed toy business. Richard often visited the Stuttgart Zoo to sketch animals, particularly the bear cubs. In 1902, the same year the Michtoms made "Teddy's Bear," the Steiff firm made their first toy bear based on Richard's designs.

Over the next 100 years the teddy bear went from strength to strength and whilst other toy crazes came and went, the bear remained an enduring favourite with generations of children across the world. The bear is loved by adults too, for his or her endearing, loyal and friendly nature. These characteristics are obvious in the latest generation of bears, those pictured on the DevonBears Designs products which show the loveable little creatures out and about in the lovely countryside of south Devon, England.
